General Summary
Ensures the organization's compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), regulatory requirements, and healthcare industry-specific accounting standards. This role involves complex accounting analyses, prepares technical accounting memoranda, supports financial reporting, and advises leadership on the accounting implications of significant transactions. Partners closely with Operational Finance, Revenue Cycle, Treasury, Legal, Compliance, and external auditors to ensure accurate financial reporting across the health system. This position requires deep technical expertise, strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex accounting matters clearly to leadership.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Researches, interprets, and implements new and existing accounting standards (FASB/GAAP) and healthcare-specific guidance.
- Prepares formal technical accounting memoranda supporting conclusions for complex or non-routine transactions.
- Analyzes accounting implications of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, affiliations, and divestitures.
- Evaluates revenue recognition matters.
- Provides accounting guidance related to leases, debt arrangements, investments, consolidations, fixed assets, and other complex areas.
- Ensures compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
- Supports preparation of audited financial statements and coordinates with external auditors during interim and year-end audits.
- Supports the completion of ERISA Section 103(a)(3)(C) audits and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards.
- Reviews and enhances disclosure controls and financial reporting processes.
- Assists in documentation and compliance with internal controls over financial reporting.
- Develops and maintains documentation of accounting policies and procedures.
- Evaluates and strengthens internal controls over complex accounting areas.
- Leads or participates in system implementations and process improvement initiatives.
- Provides training to accounting and finance staff on technical accounting matters.
- Serves as a technical accounting resource to Finance, Legal, Treasury, Strategy, and Operations.
- Prepares presentations and summaries for executive leadership and Board committees as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting Required
Work Experience:
- 2 years 2–4 years of progressive public accounting experience serving in an audit role; Demonstrated experience with complex accounting research and technical memo preparation Required
- Experience within healthcare, hospital systems, or not-for-profit organizations Preferred
Licenses:
- Certified Public Accountant Upon Hire Required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements
- Strong understanding of healthcare accounting, including revenue cycle and third-party reimbursement
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to interpret and apply complex accounting guidance
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Proficiency in ERP systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
