Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for providing basic and effective patient care under the guidance and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The CNA plays a vital role in supporting licensed nurses and the healthcare team by assisting patients in their daily activities and medical needs, ensuring adherence to established facility policies, safety standards, and procedures. CNAs serve as an essential part of the healthcare team, anticipating the needs of professional staff and providing one-to-one care for "at-risk" patients when necessary.

WORK SITE: Atlanta VA Health Care Center (AVAHCS), 1670 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA, 30033

CONTRACT LENGTH: Start Date - End Date: 10/01/2024 - 09/30/2025

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

• Provide personal nursing care, including feeding, walking, lifting, and hygiene care for patients using specialized equipment, such as those receiving oxygen or suction therapy.
• Monitor and record patients' vital signs, noting deviations and reporting them to the RN or physician when necessary.
• Assist in diagnostic examinations, including lumbar punctures, liver biopsies, bone marrow exams, and emergency procedures, by assembling equipment, positioning patients, and transporting specimens to the lab.
• Conduct post-procedure care by regularly checking patients and escorting them to and from diagnostic studies.
• Maintain and clean medical equipment such as oxygen machines, suction therapy devices, and frame beds, reporting any issues requiring repair.
• Perform simple dressing changes and care for patients with infections, communicable diseases, and those in isolation.
• Care for patients receiving oxygen through various means, including cannula, masks, or venti-masks, and patients undergoing chest therapy or postural drainage.
• Assist patients with catheter care, including both condom and indwelling Foley catheters.
• Administer basic life support (CPR) when necessary.
• Record and communicate relevant patient information to nurses for inclusion in Nursing Care Plans and document vital signs in patient charts.
• Assist with patients' admission histories and promote independence in self-care activities like eating, dressing, and applying prosthetics.
• Instruct patients on pre- and post-operative care based on information provided by medical staff.
• Conduct inventories, contraband searches, and ongoing evaluations of the mental health care environment.
• Provide assistance to mental health patients for daily activities and accompany them to appointments outside of the unit.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

• Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from any U.S. state.
• Valid CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a CNA, with at least six months of recent experience in the role.
• A Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) certification/license may be considered in lieu of CNA certification.
• Must be willing to work with COVID-19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI) for COVID-19.

Additional Information: This position may require working with patients in the Emergency Department (ED) or Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg) units, providing crucial support for both routine care and critical situations. CNAs will collaborate closely with RNs and other healthcare providers to ensure the highest quality of patient care at Atlanta VA Health Care Center.
