Primary Purpose of Position

The Surgical RN provides medical care services required during Military Treatment Facility (MTF) operations. The RN is responsible for providing clinically competent medical care services within their scope of practice. The RN working at any Defense Health Agency (DHA) site is responsible for safe patient care and ensuring adherence to all Policies and Procedures. 

Core Duties:

 • Perform a full range of RN duties in accordance with assignment under the task order, including triage; patient assessment and monitoring; use of patient monitoring and treatment equipment; appropriate nursing care, procedures, and treatments; execution of physicians’ orders within the guidelines of standard nursing practice; documentation of patient care and observations; and patient education and emotional support. 

• Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF. 

• Perform physical exam and health histories. 

• Provide health promotion, counseling, and education. 

• Skill/management of waived testing and laboratory collections (if required for the assignment). 

• Appropriate and thorough documentation in patient records. 

• Provide clinical guidance and instruction to LPNs/LVNs, nursing assistants, and ancillary personnel. 

• Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel. 

• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations. 

• Communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. 

• Follows standing orders as applicable. 

• Responsible for assessment and treatment of patient’s emergent needs in a nontraditional/traditional setting. 

• Attune assessment and critical thinking skills to ensure appropriate care can be delivered safely and within the scope of capabilities of the available resources and supplies. 

• Administers medications and treatments via oral, parenteral, and intravenously (as required by area of assignment). 

• Skilled at safely establishing, preparing, administering, maintaining, and monitoring intravenous lines/infusions/medication (if required for the assignment). 

• Serve as a staff resource for knowledge of both external and implantable venous devices and peripheral intravenous catheters: provide patient and family instruction on venous access devices; draw specimens and administer fluids and medications through these lines (if required for the assignment). 

• Medication and intravenous (IV) administration to include blood products and Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ) administration and demonstrate competency in phlebotomy as specific to the position and assignment. 

• Proficient in providing care and treatments to adults and pediatrics patients. 

• If specialty performs moderate sedation in task order, Moderate Sedation Certification must be completed under direct supervision until competence is proven. 

• Provide treatment and discharge instructions upon patient release. 

• Perform assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on physiological, psychological, and cognitive status. 

• Demonstrate sound knowledge base and action in the care and decision making for designated patient populations. If weaknesses or deficiencies are identified either by peer reviews, quality control reports (QCRs), or evaluations, the RN will be required to complete refresher training (in-services, competency reviews, continuing education, etc.) at Contractor expense. 

• Perform documentation (manually and/or by use of computer) duties on unit and in-patient record that are timely, accurate, and concise. 

• Implement care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner. 

• Demonstrate competency in medication and intravenous (IV) administration to include blood products and Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ) administration and demonstrate competency in phlebotomy
