This role can either be fully remote within the Mid-Atlantic region or in one of our offices:

  • Charlotte, NC
  • Cinncinati, OH
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Nashville, TN

The Berkley offices offer a hybrid work schedule with four days in the office and one day remote where it makes sense to do so.

Responsibilities

As an Underwriting Director, you'll maintain Berkley Fire & Marine's underwriting standards while supporting the business strategy initiatives and financial return goals through underwriting excellence. You'll utilize your extensive and diversified technical property and inland marine underwriting expertise to evaluate risks in a referral capacity. The role will also support underwriting projects including inland marine product, guidance, tools and continual underwriting education. You will also be responsible for training & development of the technical acumen of our underwriting teams along with the Regional Vice President (RVP). We'll trust you to closely collaborate with the underwriting teams to maintain compliance and underwriting standards.

 

Referrals include consultation and examination of individual risks for: risk attributes, risk selection; underwriting; pricing, use and adequacy of rating models; wordings including coverage provided and other terms and conditions; rate rule and form compliance; limits management; use of loss control and/or risk management, use of facultative reinsurance; and quoting, binding and issuance process. 

 

You'll also provide thought leadership on a continual basis to always be improving underwriting acumen and standards as needed and will pro-actively adjust to market and changing dynamics.

We'll count on you to:

  • Collaborate with RVPs as needed to support with risk quality & decision-making feedback and opportunities for individual improvement and coaching.
  • Deliver timely feedback to underwriting and leadership outlining areas for improvement.
  • Act as a resource for underwriting and support local teams with training for best practices and collaborative conversation related to underwriting improvement.
  • Continuously look for ways to improve underwriting standards. Share value-added recommendations with Senior Management.
  • Maintain a strong pulse on the underwriting environment, market conditions, competition and other factors facing the industry.
  • Collaborate to develop products and tools.
  • Work with product to manage and maintain usage of manuscripts in compliance with regulatory needs and BFM directives.
  • Work with compliance to manage and maintain usage of filings, products, etc.
  • Work with Berkley Fire & Marine and Berkley Shared Services underwriting resources in support of project initiatives.
  • Act as a resource for the underwriting office for future platform integration such as Guidewire.
  • Other underwriting related projects as assigned.
  • Provide feedback on coaching opportunities and develops related training as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of Insurance industry experience
  • Deep expertise in Inland marine lines of coverage
  • Seasoned commercial property & inland marine underwriting expe
