JOB SUMMARY

LOCATION: John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital (Ambulatory Procedure Unit)
SHIFT: 7:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.

Under the direction of the Nurse Coordinator II, the Clinical Nurse II, Mammography is a professional care worker who is responsible and accountable for providing safe, effective individualized nursing care for patients, and supportive care to significant others. Clinical Nurse II, Mammography demonstrated competency, skill, broader knowledge, and experience in the delivery of nursing care for patients during mammography and follow-ups. Participates in multidisciplinary patient care conferences, committees, and serves as a liaison between the clinical and management staff in implementing and interpreting regulatory requirement for Quality Assessment and Improvement and Quality Control activities. Functions as a nursing consultant for area staff and other healthcare workers. Nursing care involves application of the nursing process and utilizing technical skills for patient care delivery. These activities require nursing judgment based on application of scientific principles of nursing, problem solving, and teaching/learning.

Typical Duties

• Provides general direction, guidance and coordination of patient care activities delivered by other levels of nursing staff.

• Demonstrated leadership and performs charge nurse/ team leader responsibilities competently, when assigned.

• Identifies, plans, and cares for the total needs of patients taking into consideration the age specific needs of patients served in mammography and demonstrates specialized clinical expertise and skill related to breast biopsy procedures in mammography.

• Assists in radiologic procedures, including monitoring of patients before, during and after procedures such as biopsies, and delegating the activities of other nursing staff who participate in care related to breast biopsies.

• Notifies appropriate physician and nursing staff of any changes in patient's condition.

• Performs initial and ongoing assessment/data collection that includes consideration of biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational and discharge planning factors in a systematic manner.

• Obtains patient consent for biopsy procedures.

• Formulates an individualized plan of care based on patient's assessed needs, desired outcome and consideration of age related requirements.

• Recognizes and responds to priorities in patient care and implements care in knowledgeable, skillful and safe manner based on established patient and nursing practice standards.

• Provides nursing care for patient after procedures include, but not limited to, educating patient regarding pain management and care for incision site.

• Evaluates effectiveness of care and revise interventions as appropriate. Documents all nursing assessments, treatments, medications, tolerance to procedures, changes in condition, intervention and patient outcomes.

• Discusses plan of care for patients with abnormal breast results as well as provide post follow-up for patients who have had breast biopsy procedures.

• Makes appropriate and timely decisions in a crisis or emergency situation.

• Floats within the Radiology department to provide nursing care, in conformity with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

• Safely operates equipment necessary for providing patient care in assigned clinical area.

• Works and communicates effectively with a variety of individuals. Functions as a member of the health care team.

• Provides general direction, guidance and coordination of patient care given by other levels of nursing staff.

• Applies knowledge of standard operating policies and procedures. Applies principles of BSIS Infection Control and Safety.

• Demonstrates awareness of patient/family rights and ethical/legal issues.

• Actively participates in staff orientation and staff development activities for the unit.

• Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for professional practice, growth and development.

• Prepares reports as required.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
