The Lead System Engineer will be responsible for leading the design, development and deployment of Core Electronics products such as the GoLINC™, LIG, Fast Brake, Video and Event Recording products. Additionally, the successful candidate will work closely with Product Management, Project Management and railroad customers to develop world class solutions that bring advanced automation and data analytics to the rail industry.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Lead and contribute to future concepts and design enhancements for the Core Electronics products using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
- Be a Technical Leader for the projects across global cross-functional teams (Product / Project Management, SW COE, Electrical Integration, Train Control, Office Systems, Safety, Validation and Applications Engineering) assuring “cradle to grave” success.
- Translate customer requirements into functional product requirements for the design teams and own traceability of those requirements all the way through the design process to final implementation and validation.
- Participate in the development of proposals and engineering estimates/schedules for projects.
- Work with Wabtec’s scientific community and railroad subject matter experts to develop freight automation solutions, evaluate them in field trials and productize the solutions to function in a railroad revenue environment.
- Lead and participate in technical and program reviews.
- Maintain broad awareness of technical trends to ensure technical quality excellence, timely completion of work, and reviews and responsiveness to customer/program needs.
- Work collaboratively with the Global Supply Chain Organization across the various locations to support procurement of parts from an engineering requirements perspective.
- Provide technical input to customer facing documentation such as but not limited to operational manuals, installation instructions, troubleshooting guides, and product marketing material.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers based on past experiences and provide input to engineering design guidelines and best practices
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of 5 years hands-on design, requirements development and implementation experience involving; Engineering Systems, Hardware / Software Engineering, and/or Data Information Systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.
Desired Characteristics:
- Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science.
- Locomotive Systems Design Experience.
- Railroad Industry Experience.
- Prior system design experience with large-scale wireless communication-based projects.
- Experience working in the Product Development Lifecycle
- Self-starter with the ability to lead design efforts with minimum supervision.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of AAR and CENELEC standards for the rail in
