We are currently hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer in Mechanical Engineering to join the Precision Control Actuation Systems (PCAS) Department of the Hardware Engineering organization, located in Tucson, AZ (On-site).

This position is to support the Strategic Strike SSBU as the AV Mechanisms Engineering Lead.

The AV Mechanisms Engineering Lead is responsible for providing team guidance and leadership for all Mechanism Design Maturation and Verification / Validation tasks to drive execution of all Mechanisms scope. The role requires a very high level of demonstrated technical, cost, and schedule execution expertise coupled with the ability to lead high visibility projects and failure investigations on a critical proprietary program.

The additional responsibilities of the AV Mechs Engineering Lead include understanding technical requirement tracing to planned test activities and coordinating with customer counterparts to align on verification plans and methods (Test / Inspection / Demo / Analysis).  Other responsibilities include coordinating risk reduction testing, test preparations and support, missile qualification tests that verify Mechanism-level requirements, and post test data reviews. The Air Vehicle Mechanisms Engineering Lead will also serve as a Technical SME for the Integration of Mechanisms into the Air Vehicle. 

The AV Mechanism Engineering Lead role requires proactive and effective collaboration and communication across the program, with members of multiple IPTs and technical subject matter experts, with the Office of the Chief Engineer and appropriate Customer stakeholders.

What You Will Do

  • Coordinate with REA’s and Section Assembly leads to prioritize and plan all tasking. Identify roadblocks and determine mitigation steps to brief Office of the Chief Engineer, Program Management, Quality, Finance, and the Customer on status of critical tasking.

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to test, verify, and qualify hardware associated with the Mechanisms subassemblies within the Air Vehicle IPT – includes leading potential Mechanism Failure Investigations and driving FIT’s / DPD’s to closure.

  • Communicate both to the Raytheon leadership and the customer community to provide critical task status, next steps, accomplishments, issues, and help needed, while influencing other IPTs to ensure program alignment and efficient teamwork.

  • Provide leadership to the various engineering IPTs and many collaborative partners from Operations, Test Equipment, Quality, and Supply Chain Management.

  • Actively work to identify, manage, and mitigate risks or capture opportunities associated with the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) contract.

  • CAM certification and responsibilities / Full Earned Value management of 3-5 control accounts including Webstatus / BCRs / EAC / ETC / LRE manpower planning in coordination with Program Management, Finance, Air Vehicle IPTL, Hardware Engineering CPTL, and Functional Engineering.

  • Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to a team of 8-12 Mechanism REA’s.

  • Coordinate and Present Non-Advocate Technical Reviews with Mechanism SME’s.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

  • Experience in Airframe, Controls and/or Mechanisms design and verification including electro-mechanical, spring and/or pyro energetic activated mechanisms.

  • Ability to obtain Secret Special Access government clearance (required prior to start date)

  • Experience Leading a team
