About The Program in American Studies
The Program in American Studies, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, offers an interdisciplinary study of diversity in the United States, exploring American experiences through popular culture, film, literature, art, history, and politics. The program provides an undergraduate major and minor, a graduate minor, and includes approximately 50 affiliated faculty and 100 cross-listed courses from across the university. There are around 40 undergraduate majors enrolled in the program.

The position is a part-time, ongoing, benefits eligible appointment based in Ithaca, NY. There is some flexibility in that the position can be either 10 months/year at 24 hours/week (June & July off) or 11 months/year at 22 hours/week (July off). Must be willing and able to work the Friday of commencement weekend (Memorial Day Weekend). Work hours are to be scheduled between 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.
The hopeful start date is near the beginning of September.
The Opportunity
The Program Assistant for the American Studies Program (AMST) serves as the first point of contact for interested students. The primary responsibilities include acting as the undergraduate course coordinator, managing records, and assisting with events, while providing frontline administrative support for faculty, staff, and students. This role works under the general supervision of the Program Manager and handles a wide range of tasks to support the program.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare correspondence, electronic newsletters, brochures, and posters.
- Create and maintain databases including program courses and class rosters.
- Maintain and update the AMST website.
- Maintain AMST student and faculty list serves.
- Assist the Program Manager in planning and logistics for AMST’s events, including colloquia series, annual endowed lectures, receptions, and commencement.
- Assist in the preparation of event publicity materials, newsletters, website content, and correspondence with donors and alumni.
- Maintain key inventory and schedule for the AMST conference room.
- Provide front desk coverage in the morning and early afternoon.
- Adjust schedule occasionally to assist with event setup and breakdown.
- Work the Friday of commencement weekend (Memorial Day Weekend).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What We Need

- High School diploma; more than 2 years and less than 4 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and an ability and interest to learn new software and technology quickly.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Sensitivity to a culturally diverse student, faculty, and staff body.
- Confidentiality and professionalism.
Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and prioritize workload in a seasonally fast-paced office environment.
- Self-motivated with strong organizational and communication (oral and written) skills.
- Flexible and adaptive, working effectively and cooperatively with others.

- Experience with University systems: 25Live (25L), CCI, ACALOG/CourseLeaf, PeopleSoft (Faculty Center/Student Center), Lyris, OBIEE, Drupal, and Tableau.
- Prior higher education experience is helpful.
- Familiarity with social media, graphic design, and marketing are helpful.

- This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role remotely 2 days per week and on-campus 3 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.
