Job Description

General Summary

Under general supervision of the Respiratory Care Director, manages, organizes, and coordinates the clinical and technical aspects of Respiratory Care Services (plus EEG/EMG).

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Manages and directs respiratory care services in accordance with departmental and UMMS Human Resource policies and procedures.
2. Provides direction and guidance to the assigned staff.
3. Oversees the coordination and assignment of patient care duties and provides direction to the staff within each service area.
4. Evaluates the performance of assigned staff; and recommends promotions, reassignment or other status changes to the director as appropriate.
5. Assists in the determination of staffing needs and helps schedule staff to assure optimal provision of services across all managed clinical areas.
6. Investigates issues and reviews incident reports.
7. Applies corrective action as necessary, always following a full investigation and evaluation against clinical or behavioral standards.
8. Coordinates annual staff performance evaluations. Assesses on-going staff performance levels by monitoring results and providing positive and constructive feedback.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

1. Associates of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy required, Business, or other related healthcare field required. Bachelor's degree with management course work preferred.
2. ACLS or PALS certified within 3 months of accepting the position
3. Registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) required. Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist, Adult Critical Care Specialist or Registered Pulmonary Function Technician preferred
4. CPR certification is required.
5. Five years experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required. Three years of lead/supervisory experience required. Two years experience working in a Neonatal Pediatric ICU setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Proficient knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system is required. Relevant knowledge of biology, microbiology, technical mathematics, and pharmacology is required.
2. Proficient knowledge of respiratory disease with the ability to recognize patients possessing pulmonary dysfunctions.
3. Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, operation and use of standard respiratory equipment and supplies, such as, various types of ventilators, pulmonary function and diagnostic equipment, nebulizers, aerosol masks, nasal cannulas, and other equipment utilized by the department.
4. Proficient knowledge of respiratory diseases and standard treatments in order to assist with the education and training of employees. Knowledge of respiratory care procedures (auscultation, administration of bronchodilators), respiratory surgical procedures, x-ray and arterial blood gas interpretation and lab result analysis.
5. Ability to supervise, monitor daily work activities, evaluate, train and motivate performance of subordinate technical, professional and clerical support staff.
