Assistant Chief Engineer – JLL

What this job involves:

JLL is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer to join our high-performance data center operations team in Santa Clara, California. In this critical role, you will leverage your extensive mechanical engineering expertise to manage and optimize mission-critical systems in a state-of-the-art data center environment. As a senior technical leader, you will oversee HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems while implementing best practices to ensure maximum uptime, efficiency, and reliability. This position offers an exciting opportunity to apply advanced engineering principles, lead system optimization initiatives, and mentor a team of skilled facility professionals in one of the most demanding and technologically advanced facility environments.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Oversee HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems specific to data center operations
  • Implement and maintain critical environment protocols and Method of Procedure (MOP) processes
  • Conduct regular performance analyses of facility mechanical and electrical systems
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to improve data center efficiency and reliability
  • Design and implement cooling solutions optimized for high-density server environments
  • Analyze and enhance airflow management strategies
  • Develop and execute comprehensive preventive maintenance schedules for all critical infrastructure
  • Lead root cause analysis for any system failures or inefficiencies and implement corrective actions
  • Propose and implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
  • Evaluate and integrate green technologies suitable for data center operations
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE, ISO) and local regulations
  • Oversee safety protocols and conduct regular safety audits
  • Mentor and guide a team of facility technicians and engineers
  • Manage complex data center infrastructure projects, including expansions and upgrades
  • Collaborate with equipment vendors and service providers to ensure optimal system performance
  • Communicate effectively with executive management on infrastructure status and improvement plans.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of technical experience in building engineering with a strong background in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and production equipment repair and maintenance
  • Proven experience working in Data Centers/Raised Floor Environment
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Universal EPA 608 Certification
  • CRAC (Liebert) maintenance and repair experience
  • Licenses as required by authority having jurisdiction
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel
  • 2 years of trades school or documented apprenticeship in relevant craft skills
  • Ability to lift up to 80 lbs., work from heights, climb ladders up to 30 feet, and work in extreme temperature conditions
  • Availability for call-in work as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of operations expertise in data center environments
  • Expertise in one specific craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations, Material Handling Equipment)
  • Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS) and controls
  • Familiarity with fire/life safety systems
  • Vendor and contract management experience
  • Data and reporting skills with ability to analyze trends and create actionable insights
  • Strong communication and interpersonal soft skills
  • Project management exposure or experience
  • Compliance awareness and understanding of regulatory requirements
  • Leadership readiness with demonstrated ability to guide and develop team members
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of data center best practices and emerging technologies

Work Shift:

Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Salary/ Comp:

$172,931 annually
