Engage in collaborative team planning, implementing, and maintaining a nurturing and supportive education program for Head Start children. Responsible for daily compliance with Head Start standards within the classroom including education, parent involvement, nutrition, health etc. Provides Spanish/English language translation as needed to facilitate communication between parents and other Head Start staff members. Assistant must be fully prepared to assume the Co-Teacher and or Lead position depending on staffing situation. This may include and is not limited to conducting a full schedule, small and large group and outside lesson plans in the Lead or Co-Teacher role. Assistant must be capable to conduct home visit and Parent Conferences for Spanish speaking families with assistance from Co-Teacher or Lead role.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Alongside Lead and Co-Teacher co-create the weekly lesson plan, demonstrate the capacity to implement lesson plan while delegating to variable staff or substitutes.
- Collect, process, and understand all assessment data when assisting and conducting home visits and parent conferences.
- Communicate with classroom coordinator, Family Support Worker and other leadership staff needs for any aspect of the program including families, building maintenance and routine emails in the absence of the Lead, Co-Teacher or both.
- Collaborates on all home visits and parent conferences with Spanish speaking families including presenting the collected assessment data used in TSG Checkpoints and other reports of progress.
- Uses positive and effective communication and actively participates in collaborative teamwork.
- Maintains program records and documents needed for licensing and Head Start program compliance.
- Informs the teacher of classroom issues which may affect program or agency compliance or image.
- Assists with lesson planning in keeping with program performance standards, developmentally appropriate practices, content area standards, and children’s interests and skill levels that are conducive to learning.
- Creates and establishes a daily routine appropriate for preschool children to ensure compliance with all performance standards and licensing standards.
- Creates and establishes a positive and nurturing physical and emotional environment in the classroom.
- Conducts observations, recording, and evaluation of individual children for the purpose of planning activities.
- Provides Spanish language translation as needed to assist other staff members in their communication with parents and children. including Home Visits and parent/teacher conferences.
- Enforces established classroom rules and limits for behavior consistently and calmly.
- Follows health content area procedures for health and safety.
- Follows site procedures for maintenance and security at the opening and closing of each day.
- Requires regular and prompt attendance.
- Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.

- Implements nutrition goals during eating times and during nutrition education activities.
- Engages and promotes parental involvement activities in the classroom.
- Advocates for families in the program and encourages their participation.
- Develops an effective partnership with parents based on mutual trust and respect.
- Maintains sanitation of food service areas in keeping with food program guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
