Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a qualified individual to join our team as a Food Safety Regional Supervisor. Duties include: providing first line supervision to ten inspectors and one Administrative Assistant; reviewing and classifying regulatory food safety inspections, investigations and sample analysis reports; preparing regulatory and informational letters concerning food law violations; conducting hearings and recommending additional regulatory action; responding to inquiries from the general public, the regulated industry and other regulatory agencies concerning all aspects of Virginia’s Food Safety Program; participating in work planning sessions with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA); and serving as part of the Program’s Food Leadership Team. The position requires the incumbent to be able to effectively respond to emergency situations and other assigned duties during both traditional and non-traditional work hours. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy. This position is based in a VDACS Office in Roanoke, VA.

Minimum Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of food processing, food microbiology and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) concepts, dietary supplement safety, and food labeling. Strong administrative, oral and written communication and managerial skills to include experience in a supervisory capacity desired. Thorough knowledge and understanding of food laws and regulations, including the FDA Food Code and Code of Federal Regulations; food safety practices and principles; food safety program administrative procedures; public health inspections, enforcement and operating procedures. Must be able to plan and organize their work and supervise the work of others; work both independently and in a team environment; interpret and apply applicable laws and regulations; make autonomous decisions and take appropriate actions; provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external clients; effectively respond to emergency situations and other assigned duties during traditional and non-traditional work periods; and be self-motivated. The selected individual must have the ability to professionally interact with agency management and field staff, the public, the food industry, and other regulatory agencies and to make independent technical decisions on food law enforcement and food safety issues. Proficiency with standard business computer applications, managerial experience to include conducting performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, hiring, leave management, and training staff in a similar environment is strongly desired. This position will be required to occasionally travel (day and overnight trips) both throughout and outside of the Commonwealth to attend meetings and/or complete training as required or requested. H.S. Diploma/GED required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of food science, biology, chemistry, environmental health or a related field. Experience applying food safety principles, food processing and related quality and safety
controls at the government level.
