POSITION PURPOSE 

Coordinate point of care testing and laboratory quality improvement initiatives. Responsible for supporting the hospital and its ancillary services that provide POCT, ensuring regulatory compliance is met. Assists in facilitating the completion of quality assessment and improvement activities for areas of responsibility and compiles necessary data. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Point of Care Testing including new testing procedures. Participate in the evaluation and development of new point of care testing, maintaining proper records. 
  • Prepare and present internal quality assurance reports and audits to departments participating in quality improvement assessment (i.e. patient safety goals). Develop corrective action plans to monitor deficiencies in quality issues. 
  • Maintain policy and procedure manuals in accordance with CAP, CLIA, CMS, JCAHO, etc., standards. 
  • Ensure test systems are working properly, maintain, troubleshoot and take corrective action with equipment as needed. 
  • Train and orient personnel, confirming competency. 
  • Verify that all areas performing testing are doing so accurately and in accordance with regulatory guidelines. In collaboration with the Section Supervisors, oversee the proficiency testing programs for the Laboratory. 
  • Develop an acceptable quality assurance program, along with corrective action plans to monitor quality issues, if problems are determined in the Laboratory. Verify standard operating procedures are written accurately and in compliance with developed criteria. 
  • Provide technical consultation to outside physicians ensuring they are compliant with accreditation standards. 
  • Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with staff, managers, physicians, and nursing. 
  • Review and update quality assurance plans as necessary. Schedule and facilitate regular quality assurance committee meetings. 
  • Complete Laboratory accreditation application/s. Provide compliance audits to Nursing Leadership. Ensure annual competency and proficiency testing are performed. 

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

Performs other duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE 

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Medical Technology. 
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in medical technology. 
  • ASCP or equivalent required. 

  

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Basic to intermediate level of computers and software applications, especially Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledgeable in Visio & PowerPoint a plus.
