Job Details:

Purpose

Provide hereditary cardiac risk assessment and consultation services. Provide patient education, counseling, coordinate testing, facilitate decision-making, and make referrals as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews medical records to determine potential genetic testing options.  Coordinates clinical genetic testing that may be available for patients including informed consent, lab requisition forms, and letters of medical necessity. 

  • Provides genetic counseling to individuals identified with predisposing characteristics or at potentially elevated risk for developing heart disease. Includes the ability to elicit and interpret individual and family medical and psychosocial histories, provide cardiac risk assessment, communicate pertinent disease, and risk information clearly, provide counseling regarding genetic testing including the results.

  • Assists patients and families in reaching decisions about genetic disorders that correspond with their values; assists patients and/or their families to understand genetic predisposition disease, including options and limitations of prevention strategies.

  • Counsels patients on potential adverse effects of positive gene tests; discusses limitations of negative gene tests. Provides follow-up including arranging consultations with other specialists, computerized risk assessment modeling, completing consultation reports, and obtaining outside medical records or specimens.

  • Facilitates the identification of high-risk patients for genetic counseling and clinical research protocols. Assists with clinical studies, with developing educational materials, reviewing patient charts, contacting family members, and conducting public and professional presentations. Understands and facilitates patient consent process for clinical research.

  • Participates in design, writing or editing of research protocols. Initiates new research projects in consultation with a faculty member and works with the multidisciplinary team to implement these projects. 

  • Develops and maintains cooperative and positive working relationships with team members and collaborates with team to identify and resolve issues. Participates in process review. Supports team decisions once they are made and assists with implementation.  Participates in educational activities, which can include giving lectures to current and future health care professionals.  Attends and actively participates in weekly case conferences and departmental meetings, including pertinent clinic meetings.

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in genetic counseling or a related field and 1-2 years of clinical experience. Eligible to apply for active candidate status for the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification exam.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual in English and Spanish. Certified Genetic Counselor. Cardiovascular Surgery experience. Research experience. 

Salary Range

$90,000+ depending on qualifications
