Job Description
The R&D Staff Scientist applies scientific theories and principles for the design and development of new products or improvements of existing clinical panels. This person is responsible for project design and project execution with minimal supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Generate ideas for novel diagnostic tests. Perform background research pertaining to disease state, current testing methodologies, and reasoning for the addition of the diagnostic test, and present this information to executive management.
- Guide research projects through experimental design, conduction of experiments, data analysis, and formulation of conclusions. Execute accurate, timely, and thorough records of experiments and results.
- Maintain close communications with management team and other teams regarding project progress.
- Prepare/present abstracts, posters, slide presentations, and manuscripts as required for national scientific conferences, external and/or internal meetings, and peer-reviewed journals.
- Act as research manager for collaborative projects with external customers.
- Supervise and mentor technicians and train colleagues on new procedures and/or technologies.
- Regularly perform literature and web searches related to new molecular diagnostic technologies and present information during group meetings.
- Provide support for development of assay verification tools and sequence analysis as required by CAP.
- Participate in process troubleshooting based on requests of internal or external customers.
- Establish protocols and procedures for Research and Development, Quality Control, Production, and Clinical Laboratory teams and participate in the Quality Assurance plan as directed by Executive Management.
- Keep workstations clean according to established laboratory policies. Wear personal protective equipment, as necessary. Observe all safety guidelines and report any unsafe conditions to the laboratory supervisors. Perform and document instrument and procedural maintenance. Utilize inventory management system as required.
- Perform other duties and functions as directed by the R&D Manager and/or Vice President of R&D.
- Participate in job specific training, competency assessment reviews and performance evaluations.
- Is available at work during the assigned work hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00am through 5:00pm with one hour for lunch, and understand that as a salaried employee, this position may require working additional time beyond the assigned hours.

- Adheres to the laboratory’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures, and documents all related activities.
- Complies with company health, safety, environmental, and compliance policies.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Biology or Chemistry with 2-4 years of experience in related laboratory work or Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry with at least 5 years of experience in related laboratory work.
- Hands-on experience in biology techniques, such as molecular assay design and validation, PCR, nucleic acid preparation, ELISA development, NGS, etc.
- Working knowledge of molecular biology equipment and software platforms
- Proficient with commonly used Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
- Strong record-keeping skills and attention to detail in developing and following SOPs
- Productive and effective execution of laboratory experiments
- Superior oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills for working in a small-team collaborative environment
- Strong project management and organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple research activities
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to think strategically
- Ability to work in a team orientated environment
