Every day, many thousands of servers, hosts, and chefs use Toast POS (Point of Sale) to serve millions of guests in their restaurants. To make our restaurants successful, we need to develop products that install painlessly, work together seamlessly, and quickly guide restaurant staff and Toast team members to resolve any problems that occur.
The Android OS team sits at the intersection of hardware and software and builds a platform that is the foundation for the Toast POS devices enabling creation of features that delight our customers. The Android OS team partners with a broad set of teams including POS R&D, Hardware R&D, Hardware Operations, Configuration Centers and Manufacturing partners.
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer for this team. The strongest candidates will have experience with Android OS bring up, are collaborative, can review product schematics, and lead technical discussions with the Hardware team. About this roll* (Responsibilities)
The candidate will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the Android Operating System firmware on different hardware platforms. The key job duties of the Engineer would include:
- Android BSP (Board Support Package) development
Responsible for developing and maintaining the board support package for the Android OS (Operating System) on different SOC (System on Chip) platforms. This includes developing device drivers, adapting the Android OS to work with a specific Hardware Platform, and performing hardware bring-up through software development to ensure the hardware components function as expected.
- Android OS Porting
The candidate would be responsible for porting new versions of Android OS to existing or new hardware platforms. This involves understanding the hardware architecture and adapting the Operating System to work with it. This may also involve developing device drivers or modifying existing ones to ensure the hardware and software operate seamlessly together.
- Debugging and Troubleshooting the Android OS
The candidate must be able to debug and troubleshoot issues that arise during the bring-up development and testing of the BSP. This involves analyzing OS logs, diagnosing hardware and software issues, and working with other members of the development team to find solutions to the problems.
- Performance Optimization
The candidate would be responsible for optimizing the performance of the Android OS on the hardware platform in use. This may involve analyzing performance metrics, identifying bottlenecks, memory leaks, and developing solutions to improve system performance.
- Collaboration with partner teams
The candidate would work closely with other members of the development team, including software engineers, hardware engineers, product managers, and QA Engineers. This involves communicating effectively, collaborating on project tasks, and ensuring that project timelines and goals are met.
- Testing
The candidate would be responsible for testing the Android OS subsystems to ensure that it meets the required functionality, performance, and reliability standards. This may involve developing test plans, writing and executing test cases, including automated tests on Android using standardized test frameworks.
Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)
- 5+ years of software development experience, which includes 3 years of experience working with embedded device software.
- Experience working with Hardware teams to review and analyze product schematics.
- Android OS or Linux Kernel bring-up / BSP (Board Support Package) experience.
- Experience writing or integrating, and debugging device drivers e.g. display, power management, WiFi, GPIO drivers or similar.
- Proficient in C/C++, Java or other ob
