Product Design Lead (Senior Manager) - Platform Design System

The Design team at Capital One is at the forefront of enriching our customers’ digital and physical experiences. We champion a thriving environment of collaboration, authenticity and healthy critique, in which we honor diversity of thought, create a culture of belonging, and elevate one another. If you’re an innovator and storyteller who embraces an environment where you can experiment, learn, and change banking for good, we would love to hear from you.

We are currently seeking a Product Design Leader to join our Card Servicing Experience design team. We design the experiences and tools that help our servicing associates help our customers, or help our customers help themselves. The work we do ensures customers can easily navigate any question or problem they have along their journey with us, no matter which path they follow.

This Senior Manager, Product Design Lead, will oversee our platform design system and governance processes – ensuring that when we expand our product feature set, we do so in a methodical, systematic way. We’re looking for a design leader who will take a systems-mindset to defining and deploying consistent, reusable componentry and patterns across our product portfolio. This designer gets excited by enabling fellow design and product partners with the documentation needed to leverage, contribute to, scale, and evolve our library.

What You’ll Do:

As a leader and maker, you’ll be asked to handle responsibilities, including:

  • Facilitation — planning and facilitating workshops with internal partners to deliver experiences that align business and user needs

  • Prioritization — engaging in strategic portfolio planning to set the product and design roadmap

  • User-centered — embracing and advocating for an experience mindset, reminding us all to focus on the user, even if our eyes are on the platform

Discovering & Delivering

  • Research — leading traditional and non-traditional design-thinking methodologies across the product delivery lifecycle, from foundational user research through usability

  • Collaboration — partnering with technology, product, and the business to uncover needs and translate them into engaging, simple, intuitive, and scalable design patterns

  • Storytelling — evangelizing the value of a systems-mindset, influencing partner adoption and making it easy to realize business impact

  • Form & Function  — demonstrating robust knowledge of UX best-practices, having a sharp and highly critical eye for visual design, and balancing those with what is needed functionally and what can be built realistically

  • Quality — ensuring alignment to patterns and best practices through oversight and periodic experience review

  • Guidance – becoming the subject matter expert on pattern usage and approved practices, and providing methods that enable designers and partners to obtain your guidance as they make experience enhancements

  • Building — delivering reusable components and patterns via high-fidelity design assets for acceptance, development, and delivery to market in partnership with technology colleagues

Leadership

  • Enabling easy adoption of and evangelization for using approved patterns and practices

  • Teaching the mindset for identifying when to create new patterns and when not to

  • Owning and facilitating the design system contribution model between design, product, and tech

  • Forming relationships with broader design system teams and thinking strategically about how to plan for eventual cross-business standardizations

Basic Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience in a Product Design role

  • 5 years of experience building and scaling design systems

  • 5 years of experience leading teams
