Teck Alaska Incorporated, Red Dog Operations, one of the world’s largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Apprentice.
Reporting to the HE Shop Supervisor.
Schedule is an even rotation; 2 weeks on-site, 2 weeks off-site
Responsibilities:
• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Establish basic understanding of Mechanical components for fleet mobile heavy equipment such as haulage trucks, dozers, loaders and graders
• By assisting the HE Shop Supervisor or other Journeyperson(s) become familiar with Industrial Mechanics to include assembling, installing, repairing and the dismantlement of mobile heavy equipment
• Learn various processes of heavy machinery components such as engine, transmission, cooling system, fuel and exhaust systems
• Assist with mechanical preventative maintenance on fleet vehicles
• Assist with other job duties such as equipment set-up, mechanic helper or general shop clean up tasks such as housekeeping and organization of shop
• Maintain a weekly apprentice log book
• Perform maintenance work individually as skill level progresses
• Complete and provide accurate work closure details which should be recorded on work order
• Develop competency to serve as relief Service Oiler when required within one year
• Ensure all tools and equipment are maintained and kept in a clean and orderly condition
• Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and have the willingness to learn and advance through the Heavy Duty Apprentice progression
• Communicate effectively with other trade personnel, colleague and supervisor about assigned tasks and ensuring carryover and updates of completed tasks throughout the shift
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental risks and hazards as well as comply with safety policies and procedures (MSHA and Red Dog EMS training) and ensure daily workplace inspections are done in order to accurately identify and correct workplace hazards
• Ensure compliance with all established policies and standard operating procedures and advises coworkers and visitors of such policies and procedures as required
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
• Must have acquired training at a technical school such as ATC and/or obtained 6 months related work experience
• Desire to advance to higher levels in the competency development system by training and becoming proficient at specific tasks and duties in the Maintenance department and willing to work toward Journeyperson status
• Must have the ability to adhere to high safety standards
• Must be able to work day, afternoon, or night shifts as required
• Must be a team player and able to communicate well with others
• Must be highly motivated and have ability to perform tasks with limited direction
• Must be able to work outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions
• Must be able to perform labor intensive work when required
• Must be able to follow directions
• Ability to obtain a valid Alaska driver license is desirable
