About the Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students and beginning professionals with practical experience in a specific area of museum work at The Museum of Modern Art. Interns participate in weekly professional development activities designed to increase understanding of the Museum’s various collections, exhibitions, and departments. The Museum hosts approximately 25 interns in various departments across our institution. Participants may arrange for academic credit through their school, but it is not a requirement.

MoMA Summer 2026 internships require a commitment of four days per week. The schedule is Monday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. One must have a minimum of two years of college completed (or equivalent) by June 2026 in order to apply.

Department Projects & Tasks

The E-commerce Retail Intern will provide essential support to the MoMA Design Store teams during the critical planning and execution phase for the Fall and Holiday 2025 marketing season. The intern will gain hands-on experience in both physical retail marketing and digital commerce strategies. Tasks will be focused in the following areas:

  • Fall/Holiday Integrated Marketing & Planning (both Retail & Digital): Assisting in the planning and content development for our Fall/Holiday selling season.
    • Support the creation and organization of the Fall/Holiday Marketing Calendar, ensuring alignment across channels.
    • Help prepare marketing briefs for new products and collections.
    • Support email marketing with product briefs, providing links, building emails, and reporting.
    • Support social media with content development, links, and reporting.
  • E-Commerce & Web Optimization Support: Improving the customer journey and product presentation on MoMA Design Store’s website.
    • Conduct website audits to identify areas for optimization, focusing on product descriptions, navigation, and site search functionality.
    • Assist the e-commerce team with the timely merchandising of new and current products
    • Support A/B testing or site improvement projects by documenting results and contributing to implementation plans.
    • Build and export e-commerce related reports to drive business strategy
  • In-Store Events & Promotional Execution: Hands-on involvement in press and customer event planning.
    • Press Preview Planning: Assist the Marketing team with the logistical planning (materials, fact checking, sample coordination) and on-site execution of the Fall/Holiday Press Preview event.
    • In-Store Event Support: Help plan and coordinate details for Holiday-themed events or activations within the physical store locations, ensuring a seamless customer experience.
    • Promotion Communication: Support the creation and dissemination of clear promotional guidelines and materials to in-store staff to ensure consistent messaging.

Upon completion of this internship, the intern will have a comprehensive understanding of the retail marketing lifecycle, from strategic planning (Fall/Holiday) to execution (events, promotions), practical experience in omnichannel marketing, connecting digital (eCommerce) and physical (in-store) customer experiences, developing project management skills by coordinating multiple moving parts for large-scale events (Press Preview), and an enhanced their ability to conduct digital optimization analysis and contribute to actionable recommendations for web improvements.

Intern will gain hands-on experience in planning and executing an integrated Fall/Holiday strategy across digital, e-commerce, and in-store channels; develop foundational e-commerce skills by supporting site audits, merchandising updates, and testing initiatives; develop core marketing skills by supporting the creation of campaign briefs, product storytelling, and content for email and social channels during the Fall/Holiday season; strengthen analytical and communication skills by contributing to reporting, performance insights, and clear promotional messaging.

Department Skillset Requirements

Candidates with an academic background in Marketing, E-commerce, or Retail. Applicants should be organized and attention to detail-oriented, proactive communicators, and possess time management and prioritization skills. Web content management- familiarity with Shopify or similar platforms, basic web, email and social media analytics skills
