A Day in the Life
The Medical Evidence function within the Surgical Operating Unit focuses on developing and communicating robust clinical evidence to support medical decision-making, access, and adoption of advanced surgical technologies, including stapling, energy devices, and robotic-assisted surgery used across minimally invasive and open procedures.As part of this evolving function, the Sr Medical Science Manager – Pubs & Sci Comm leads the medical science writing capability for the Surgical Medical Evidence team. This role manages a team responsible for developing scientific publications and clinical communications and provides strategic oversight of publication planning and execution across the Surgical evidence portfolio. The Senior Manager establishes and maintains scientific writing standards, scalable governance processes, and publication best practices. Additionally, this role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, compliant dissemination of clinical evidence across publications and scientific communications and aligns publications activities with clinical and business priorities.
The role collaborates closely with Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, HEOR, Regulatory Affairs, and other cross‑functional partners to ensure clear and consistent communication of clinical data. The Senior Manager also works with key opinion leaders (KOLs), investigators, and other healthcare professionals to support development and dissemination of scientific evidence that advances understanding and appropriate use of Medtronic therapies.
In addition to scientific leadership, the Senior Manager builds and develops a high‑performing team focused on evidence dissemination. This includes mentoring team members, fostering a culture of accountability and scientific excellence, and ensuring effective execution of evidence dissemination across the Surgical portfolio.
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Oversee process for development of manuscripts, abstracts, posters, congress presentations, and other collateral produced by the Surgical Medical Evidence team, ensuring scientific accuracy, consistency, and quality.
- Lead development and execution of publication and scientific communication strategies, including identification of evidence gaps and prioritization of publication opportunities in partnership with clinical and medical leadership.
- Lead cross‑functional alignment with Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, HEOR, Regulatory Affairs, and Marketing to ensure consistent and effective communication of clinical evidence.
- Oversee the planning and execution of therapy or product cross-functional evidence councils, partnering with Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, HEOR, and Marketing teams to strategically prioritize evidence generation, publication strategies, and key scientific deliverables.
- Establish and maintain best practices, templates, and quality standards for scientific writing and publication development, ensuring compliance with internal policies and industry guidelines including ICMJE and GPP.
- Directly manage, mentor, and develop a team of medical science writers/specialists and program managers, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development.
- Allocate resources across projects and manage team deliverables to ensure efficient execution of publication plans and timelines.
- Support interpretation and communication of clinical data to inform cross‑functional decision‑making and evidence dissemination strategies.
- Oversee internal review workflows and publication processes to ensure timely, compliant development of scientific communications across the portfolio.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree required and minimum of 7 years of experience in medical writing, scientific communications, or clinical research with demonstrated leadership, mentoring, or team management in the medical device (preferred) or pharmaceutical industry, with 5+ of managerial experience or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with 5+ of managerial experience.
