About the role

The Genetic Counseling Assistant provides administrative support for tasks including scheduling, report and document preparation, departmental visitation, and communication/telephone calls.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is currently seeking a Genetic Counseling Assistant to support our esteemed genetic counselors within the Departments of Oncology and Hematology. The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) will be entrusted with a range of advanced administrative responsibilities, including but not limited to patient engagement activities, acquisition of comprehensive family medical histories before scheduled appointments, monitoring the progress of genetic testing outcomes, oversight of genetic send-out kits, and provision of multifaceted administrative support as necessitated by the department's requirements.

Primary job functions encompass:

  • Procuring Medical Records: Retrieving pertinent medical records.

  • Managing External Medical Records: Coordinating the scanning of external medical records into the electronic medical record (EMR) system.

  • 3-Generation Pedigree Compilation: Collating and entering three-generation pedigrees into specialized software ahead of new patient consultations.

  • Educational Materials Maintenance: Regularly replenishing educational documents and diagrams within the Genetic Counseling (GC) office area.

  • Patient Appointment Coordination: Conducting patient appointment reminder calls and judiciously managing appointment rescheduling when necessary.

  • Appointment Communication: Notifying patients and their families of any appointment changes to ensure timely communication.

  • Patient Summary Updates: Updating patient summaries with pertinent medical and family history data in advance of their visits.

  • Preparation for Patient Visits: Preparing for patient appointments by printing essential documents, such as test results and patient surveillance guidelines.

  • Genetic Testing Oversight: Monitoring the progress of genetic testing results, with diligent follow-up on any delayed outcomes.

  • Tracking Genetic Send-Out Kits: Ensuring the retrieval of genetic send-out kits and, if required, liaising with families for their return.

  • Assisting Genetic Counselors on Call: Providing assistance to the genetic counselor on call as directed, including follow-ups with referring healthcare providers.

  • Case Conference Facilitation: Organizing and facilitating genetic predisposition case conferences, including pre-meeting notifications, running the case conference, and disseminating post-conference resources.

  • Departmental Projects Support: Contributing to departmental projects such as educational material creation/review and patient surveillance guideline updates.

  • Research Assistance: Assisting with research initiatives, including IRB applications, chart reviews, and literature reviews.

  • Additional Duties: Undertaking other duties as assigned by the genetic counseling team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A substantial interest in genetic counseling.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in genetics, biology, psychology or other relevant field.

Minimum Experience:

  • Some experience with office technologies, including Microsoft Office suite


 

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $21.00 - $35.50 per hour for the role of Genetic Counseling Assistant.
