BASIC PURPOSE

The Fitness & Sports Manager’s primary duty is the management of the fitness and sports department and the direction of its staff, programs, and operations.  The Fitness & Sports Manager position exercises independent judgment and discretion on matters of significance, including staffing, budgeting, program development, and policy implementation.  The role operates with minimal day-to-day supervision and is accountable for departmental outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides direct supervision, leadership, and performance management for fitness instructors, coaches, personal trainers, and fitness attendants.
  2. Achieve aligned monthly and annual revenue goals through effective programming.
  3. Meet regularly with Center Director and Corps Officers to review outcomes and refine the effectiveness of program strategies, planning, and progress tracking to reach revenue goals.
  4. Achieve year-over-year growth in program enrollment.
  5. Responsible for interviewing, selecting, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating staff.
  6. Identify potential talent and create a meaningful strategy for next level readiness.
  7. Develop succession plans by creating professional development strategies to support retention and long-term growth of personnel.
  8. Addresses performance issues, implements corrective action when necessary, and provides recommendations for promotions and terminations.
  9. Establish staff expectations, policies, and procedures consistent with the organizational standards.
  10. Lead regularly scheduled in-service meetings with staff.
  11. Plan, develop, implement fitness and sports programs to meet member needs and organizational objectives.
  12. Analyze participation trends and make program adjustments to maximize engagement and effectiveness.
  13. Develop and manage the department’s budget to include forecasting, expense control, and revenue generation.
  14. Evaluate outcomes using data and metrics to make informed decisions.
  15. Collaborate with Marketing to promote programming and other internal departments to enhance programs.
  16. Ensure that programs are inclusive and align with the mission of The Salvation Army.
  17. Maintain safety standards and organizational policies.
  18. Teach and ensure compliance of emergency protocols and incident reporting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Fitness & Nutrition, Sports Management, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, or related field preferred. Five years of job-related experience may be considered as a substitute.
  2. Professional certifications such as ACE, NASM, ACSM preferred
  3. First Aid, CPR and AED required. Instructor certification preferred.  If not current must be obtained within two months of employment.
  4. Experience managing budgets and multi-program operations.
  5. Proven leadership, coaching, and team-development skills.
  6. Strong organizational, communication and conflict resolution skills.
  7. Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and make decisions with minimal supervision.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  1. Must possess a valid California Class C Driver License, and ability to drive a Salvation Army vehicle
  2. Must be 21 years or older.
  3. Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check to include a DOJ Livescan Fingerprint check.
  4. Complete The Salvation Army vehicle course training.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis
  2. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
  3. Ability to grasp, push, and/or pull objects
  4. Ability to reach overhead
  5. Ability to operate telephone
  6. Ability to operate a computer
  7. Ability to process written, visual, and/or verbal information
  8. Ability to operate basic office equipment and tools PC, Fax Machine, Telephone, Calculator, Copier, Printer.
