JOB TITLE:
Makerspace Technician
JOB PURPOSE:
Under direction and consultation from the Makerspace Manager, the Makerspace Technician will set up, adjust, inspect, and maintain state-of-the-art emergent technology equipment in the Wyrkshop makerspace to ensure equipment, machinery, and tools are in top working order and material supplies are well stocked at all times.
The Makerspace Technician is responsible for inspecting finished projects and ensuring quality control and quality assurance of state-of-the-art, advanced-use makerspace equipment, including but not limited to high-resolution desktop 3D printers; industrial FDM, polyjet, and metal 3D printers; 3D scanners; laser cutters; CNC routers and mills; an electronics bench and associated equipment; benchtop and handheld tools in a fully-equipped woodshop; and fabrication equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrate creative problem-solving instincts and ability to quickly learn and utilize non-traditional tools. Have an interest in or experience with makerspace hardware and software. Understand how to operate machines, and how to instruct others to use machines in accordance with Wyrkshop operation and safety standards.
- Interact, assist, and engage effectively and positively with a diverse population of educators, UW students, faculty, staff, and members of the Laramie community.
- Remain positive, enthusiastic, flexible, and upbeat in the face of challenges.
- Provide service to the UW community by answering questions, assisting visitors and users with projects and questions, providing troubleshooting, and promoting Wyrkshop resources.
- Demonstrate strong verbal, writing, and presentation skills.
- Have an interest in or demonstrated ability to provide small group instruction, orientation, workshops, and tutorials. Makerspace Technicians will deliver regular onsite lessons on machine maintenance and upkeep to different groups.
- Ensure all areas of the makerspace are clean, organized, and ready for use. Monitor and clean machines in accordance with Wyrkshop standards.
- Assess mechanical and operational problems and take corrective action. Make the necessary corrections and running adjustments to maintain high and consistent quality.
- Make preventive maintenance checks. Clear issues and set aside equipment for inspection and repair. Test out equipment after repairs, changeovers or extended downtime. Report findings to Makerspace Manager and take appropriate action.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of makerspace components and tools inventory.
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail, record-keeping, and documentation skills. Keep diligent maintenance logs for all machines. Maintain an inventory of machines, equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Manage a small equipment and inventory quarterly budget and monitor expenses against budget allocations. Coordinate with Makerspace Manager to acquire additional consumable materials and/or new or replacement machines.
- Attend staff meetings and/or training sessions to achieve Wyrkshop objectives, encourage teamwork, strengthen and promote communication, and enhance professional growth.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous customer service experience is preferred but not required.
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Have a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
