Clinical Director, Distributed Veterinary Teaching Program (DVTP)

Overview

The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Utah State University (USU) seeks applicants for the position of Clinical Director for the Distributed Veterinary Teaching Program (DVTP). The faculty rank will be at the Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate, or Clinical Professor level. This position plays a key leadership role in overseeing clinical education for veterinary students in a distributed learning environment. The Clinical Director will ensure high-quality clinical training, maintain strong partnerships with affiliated veterinary instructional partners (AVIPs), and contribute to the advancement of veterinary education at USU.

 

This role carries a primary emphasis on teaching (75%), with service responsibilities comprising 25% of the position. Faculty in this role are expected to engage in high-quality instruction, curriculum development, and student mentorship, alongside fulfilling service obligations related to clinical education program administration, accreditation compliance, and university governance. Additionally, this role requires regular travel throughout the state and Intermountain Region, and oversight of others’ travel for frequent onsite, in-person, and/or remote visits to AVIP sites and preceptors to support student learning, ensure clinical training quality, and maintain strong partnerships with affiliated instructional partners.

Responsibilities

Teaching (75%)

• Develop, implement, and evaluate clinical curriculum in collaboration with faculty and AVIPs.
• Directly supervise and mentor preceptors who instruct students in clinical practice settings.
• Foster partnerships with AVIPs and external stakeholders to enhance student learning opportunities.
• Facilitate student assessments, ensuring consistent and fair evaluation processes.
• Engage in continuous improvement of clinical teaching methodologies and student outcomes.
• Deliver structured didactic and experiential learning components as part of clinical education.
• Maintain currency in veterinary clinical education methodologies and industry best practices.

Service (25%)

• Provide leadership and oversight for all clinical components of the DVTP, ensuring alignment with the College’s educational goals and accreditation standards.
• Maintain compliance with AVMA COE Accreditation Policies and Procedures.
• Develop and deliver on-going required training (i.e., annually) to all AVIP preceptors, either in-person or via distance delivery.
• Represent the CVM in professional and community interactions.
• Participate in university governance, including committee service and administrative duties.
• Support faculty development initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration within the university.
• Engage with industry and community partners to enhance program visibility and impact.

Qualifications

Minimum: Qualifications:

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent from an accredited program.
• At least 7 years of clinical veterinary experience.
• Current licensure to practice veterinary medicine in any U.S. state.
• Ability to travel frequently to partner clinics and teaching sites. 
• Professional demeanor suitable for academic and public interactions. 
• Valid driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials
• Demonstrated veterinary professional leadership.
• Technological expertise to conduct remote interactions with AVIPs and preceptors.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Board certification in an AVMA-recognized specialty.
• Practice management experience.
• Student teaching experience in veterinary education.
• Familiarity with AVMA COE Accreditation Policy and Procedures.
• Proven ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders.

Additional Qualifications for consideration for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor:

• At least 15 years of clinical veterinary experience.
• Demonstrated academic or leadership experience commensurate with the rank of Associate Clinical Professor, as defined by USU Policy.
