SUPERVISOR: Paul Smith Children’s Village Manager
SALARY: $15.45-$18.54 Per Hour
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Assists with gardening tasks throughout the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. Tends plants in the conservatory, production greenhouse, and on the grounds on a regular basis. Serves staff at the Paul Smith Children’s Village every Sunday on a seasonal basis. Serves as back up staff for the Tilted Tulip Gift Shop, the Botanic Garden Welcome Desk and Events.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as primary staff on duty in the Paul Smith Children’s Village each Sunday June through August. Opens and closes the Children’s Village, monitors, and maintains the area for safety and cleanliness, and waters and fertilizes container plants.
- Plants annuals, perennials, and woody plants in gardens and displays.
- Waters plants in the Children’s Village, production greenhouse, conservatory, bedding plant hardening off area, container plantings, orangerie, and on the grounds.
- Mixes and applies fertilizer as directed in the course of watering.
- Pulls weeds and applies herbicides to kill weeds.
- Work harmoniously with staff, volunteers and interns from all backgrounds, identities and ages, orientation, and abilities.
- Maintain a safe environment for the Botanic Gardens staff, volunteers, and visitors.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with the breakdown and storage of furnishings at the conclusion of events.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of gardening practices.
- Knowledge of weed control techniques.
- Knowledge and ability to use technology including basic computer skills and word processing software.
- Strong communication skills with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to be organized, creative, and effective when priorities change rapidly due to changing conditions.
- Ability to work independently and to exercise reasonable judgment in decision making with minimal supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
Some post-secondary coursework in horticulture, botany, or plant science.
