This position as a Mechanical Design Engineer is with the Space Systems department of Collins Aerospace. Responsibilities include mechanical engineer working with hardware for human space flight programs. Daily works consists of engineering associated with the design, structural analysis, assembly build, and hardware testing support. The primary focus will be on hardware that supports the rocket Thrust Vectoring System for the Artemis program. Additionally, this position will have opportunities to support work on thermal control and environmental life support components and assemblies for various aerospace applications, both crewed and uncrewed. This includes both NASA and commercial partners ranging from the International Space Station to various satellite platforms, and other programs supporting the new lunar mission, Artemis.

What You Will Do:

  • Participate in a technical team to design lightweight components and assemblies to support space flight hardware requirements. Components designs need to conform to contractual specifications and internal standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Understand all critical requirements and write needed documentation to clearly communicate design intent and analysis.
  • Work with technical community during problem investigations during hardware build and testing. Using engineering analysis to determine cause of issue and develop a solution.
  • Use engineering knowledge to understand and modify spaceflight hardware CAD models. Used knowledge of CAD models to understand assembly function to further design development of space flight quality hardware.
  • Design and analysis component updates to accommodate changes to program priorities and updates to improve design functionality. Work to include updating detailed part drawings and supporting documentation.
  • Work with a team of technical functions to learn and develop your own skills as an engineer. Spend time developing the fundamental knowledge and skills needed in aerospace engineering.
  • Work closely with 3D CAD Software and associated FEM analysis tools for simple stress analysis.
  • Create detailed stress analysis and reports to document the structural integrity of hardware in challenging space environments. Documenting new component designs, problem investigations, design modification among others.
  • Investigate relevant design factors such as ease of manufacture, tolerancing and its effects, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, mistake-proofing, replaceability, strength-to-weight efficiency, and cost as needed for the part design.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 12 months or less of relevant professional work experience (excluding internships).
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract. ​

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Following a task to completion and the flexibly to take on all needed tasks. Showing the intellectual curiosity to investigate all aspects of a problem and see it through to a positive solution.
  • Knowledgeable in basic 3-D CAD modeling fundamentals and the associated FEA Simulation software. The ability to learn and develop those skills over the coming years.  
  • Ability to work within a matrix organization to achieve team and program goals.
  • Clear communication of complicated technical information.
  • Experiences with basic engineering analysis, tolerance studies, stress calculations and manufacturing support.
