The role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer - UAS you’ll have a role that is out of the ordinary. QinetiQ is growing its UAS capability which boasts a number of UAS platforms as an Original Equipment Manufacturer. Our platforms service over 30 countries worldwide. The Mechanical Design Engineer role is focused on design, manufacture and in service support of existing platform modifications through to prototyping new platforms. The pace and rate of growth in UAS has created a great opportunity for a dynamic outgoing Mechanical Design Engineer to join our successful team.
Day-to-day, this role will involve solving Customer problems working alongside a wider team of QinetiQ engineers. The Mechanical Design Engineer is expected to be flexible supporting demand and capable of supporting mechanical manufacturing in peak production demands.

- Platform and Modification Mechanical Design
- Fuel Management System Design
- Mechanical Build and Manufacture
- Mechanical Production
- Mechanical Test
- Managing Suppliers
- Production of supporting Design Documentation
- Use of composite materials
The successful Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for delivery of quality designs within the Aviation Engineering Centre (AEC) team at Boscombe Down. The role will require periodic travel tour Farnborough and Ashford sites working with a wider UAS team to deliver projects.
Essential experience of the Mechanical Design Engineer
- Experience Designing Technical Hardware solutions, ideally from a regulated industry requiring complex problem solving, precision tolerances or specific domain knowledge
- Significant experience creating technical Drawings from 3D Models, working with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and subject matter experts
- Significant experience creating concepts and generating solution ideas and exposing those ideas to critique
- We would expect the individual to display extensive and substantial practical knowledge and experience of the competency area and have the ability to provideguidance to other, including practitioners encountering unusual situations in the following competency areas, including but not limited to:
- Aerodynamics - Desirable
- Composite Materials
- Coatings
- Corrosion
- Fuel Systems and Management
- Materials Selection
- Concept Design and Development
- Requirements Capture and Analysis
- Regulations
- Hazard Identification, Safety Cases and Safety Management systems
- Applying Analytical, Simulation and Modelling Techniques where required
Qualifications for the Mechanical Design Engineer
- HNC/HND/Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or Product Design (or equivalent experience)
- Knowledge and understanding of engineering fundamentals; formal training or experience in engineering subjects such as materials, stress awareness, mechanism designs, design principles, electrical awareness etc.
