POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Case Western Reserve University is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Family Medicine to serve in a non-clinical research and teaching role within the department. The role involves actively engaging in research projects, both those led by the candidate and by others across the university and its affiliated health systems. In addition, the successful candidate will engage with medical students and residents in teaching research and related skills. Key responsibilities therefore encompass: (1) Developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions designed to improve the quality of primary health care; (2) Contributing to larger research projects within the Department; (3) Teaching and supervising students and residents in research activities on a regular basis.
The successful candidate will be part of a highly successful team of health services researchers within the Department with more than $7 million in current research funding. The successful candidate will help build a pipeline of health services researchers who can contribute to the larger health services research community and eventually mentor new investigators with an interest in health services research, while building his/her own independent research program in an area of interest of relevance to family medicine. Over the course of 3-4 years, it is expected and anticipated that the successful candidate will be independently funded and have a significant track record of scholarship as evidenced by a number of peer-reviewed publications and abstracts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Submit funding applications and carry out a research program aligned with the candidate’s interests and priorities of the Department. (50%)
2. Contribute as a co-investigator to existing research projects within the Department (30%).
3. Provide formal education and guidance to residents and students as they complete their own research projects or engage in established research projects. (10%)
4. Represent the Department’s research team on specific committees and related activities at the request of the Department Chair. (10%)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be directly responsible for the hiring and supervision of research assistants working on his or her own projects as well as those engaged in other projects when requested. The successful candidate will also supervise individual research projects being carried out by residents or students when needed, in collaboration with other faculty members.
QUALIFICAITONS
Experience: A minimum of three years working in a research capacity in an academic environment with a track record of a minimum of three peer-reviewed publications as lead or second author. A minimum of two years of teaching in an academic health care environment including participating or leading regular courses, seminars, or workshops.
Education/Licensing: A PhD in a discipline related to health services research such as in the fields of public health, statistics, research design, psychology, etc.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team.
Must be reliable, punctual, and able to meet tight deadlines as required for submission of grant applications, manuscripts, and abstracts.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Hours and location of work are generally flexible, but will usually fall in the range of 8AM – 4PM Monday to Friday. Effective research participation sometimes required irregular working hours to meet deadlines, etc., and the successful candidate will be adaptable in scheduling the necessary work. No specific physical requirements are foreseen.
