The Chief Development Officer will lead in the development of a comprehensive fundraising plan that optimizes the best of the School of Civic Leadership resources, which include an outstanding faculty, committed alumni and a university development program that is well resourced and on the rise by every measure.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional fundraiser and colleague, leading and furthering the growth of the School of Civic Leadership’s individual philanthropy team and strategically growing a portfolio of high-net-worth donors. He or she will have a high level of emotional intelligence, will be a collaborative, steady, organized, and experienced leader with demonstrated success closing six- and seven-figure-plus gifts. The successful candidate will work closely with the Dean of the School of Civic Leadership and the Executive Director of Civitas Institute to secure resources for the faculty, fellows, students, research, and programs of the School and Institute.

Purpose

Serving as the Chief Development Officer for the University of Texas School of Civic Leadership, the successful candidate will work closely with the School’s Dean and with the Executive Director of the Civitas Institute to plan, lead and grow all aspects of fundraising and comprehensive development initiatives with a specific focus on high-capacity donors.

Responsibilities

• As a direct report to the Dean, the CDO will have the opportunity to actively participate on the Dean’s senior leadership team, providing professional insight and advice based on extensive knowledge and experience.
• Drive the planning, budget and strategic direction of customized and comprehensive fundraising plans, oversee the implementation and management of all development activities, including timelines, budget, staff, and outside counsel.
• Manage a portfolio of high-impact supporters, solicit gifts, and conduct executive prospect strategy meetings with the Dean to maximize time with donors. Create robust and highly proactive major and planned giving programs, whereby progress can be measured quantitatively. Deliver on quantifiable goals, specifically excelling in successful major and principal gift solicitations.
• Establish and maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships with external contacts and constituents on behalf of School of Civic Leadership and Civitas Institute.
• Establish and communicate fundraising goals, provide leadership on major gift cultivation and solicitation strategies, and conduct regular performance evaluations.
• Travel throughout the United States and around the globe representing the School and building relationships with its donors, prospects and alumni.
• Work collaboratively and proactively with Texas Development to further the fundraising efforts of the School of Civic Leadership. Create and nurture a culture of philanthropy within the School and its constituencies.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree
• 7+ years of experience as a development professional
• Proven track record of closing six- and seven-figure-plus gifts
• Ability to build significant relationships with new and existing donors
• Ambition to strategically grow an individual philanthropy team
• Exemplary written and oral communications skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence
• Experience with a comprehensive campaign in a complex educational setting
• Ability to think strategically and creatively and work well under pressure
• Capable of working independently, while also engaging in collaboration between teams
• Highly organized, collaborative, collegial and intelligent
• Ability to travel throughout the United States to visit prospects and donors
• Successful candidate must live in or be willing to relocate to the Central Texas area

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher
