Job Description

Primary Function of Position

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. designs and sells the da Vinci® Surgical System, a minimally invasive robotic surgery system that uses complex mechanics, replaceable instruments and accessories, and enhanced three-dimensional visualization to extend surgical technique and precision beyond the limits of the human hand.

This is a unique role that requires multiple areas of engineering prototype development. The Sr. Lab Electrical Engineering Technician will support development of new endoscope designs throughout the qualification phase. The successful candidate will have the capability to work with engineers to resolve complex design and manufacturing issues, as well as the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to troubleshoot higher level system issues. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.

The Sr. Electrical Engineering Lab Technician supports the Multiport Vision Engineering team with a variety of functions, primarily in the electrical engineering lab, including soldering, board bring-up, testing of electrical modules, lab equipment maintenance and procurement. Excellent communication, strong sense of ownership and organization skills are critical for success in this role.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Rework, soldering of electrical components on PCBAs, assembly of systems and subsystems
  • Work with electrical design engineers to test electrical boards and systems, support electrical engineering staff in the lab, support board bring-up, debug, root cause analysis and characterization. Put together test reports. Many boards include miniature and dense electronics design (similar to cellphone technology) with rigid, flex and hybrid PCBs.
  • Work with mechanical engineers to assemble, test and validate mechanical design of miniaturized and delicate assemblies.
  • Rework, soldering and assembly under microscopic vision
  • Lab and inventory management of equipment, tools and components, equipment calibration
  • Place purchase orders, procurement / storage of parts, consignment of components / kits to external suppliers
  • Other duties as needed and identified by the functional manager

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience 

  • 3 years work experience in a fast paced engineering lab environment
  • Experience and proficiency with soldering / rework of electrical boards (PCBAs) with miniature and dense components
  • Lab and equipment management
  • Working with engineers on bring-up, debug and test of electrical boards, subsystems and systems; Performing verification testing independently after initial guidance
  • Using various lab measurement equipment such as oscilloscope, logic analyzer, DMMs
  • Assembly of mechanical systems with miniaturized features / components under microscopic vision
  • Procurement of parts from suppliers and distributers; Storage and stock management of engineering components
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Excellent organization skills; Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Atlassian JIRA / Confluence, Strong sense of ownership and a drive to complete assignments
