Job Description

The successful candidate will contribute to one or more research projects funded by USDA, NASA, and industry sponsors. All projects focus on skeletal muscle mitochondria and inflammation, with current projects in 7 different species. The candidate will learn analytical techniques, including high-resolution re spirometry, multiplex assays using MesoScale Discovery, cryosectioning and immunofluorescence, and kinetic colorimetry. The candidate will have the opportunity to integrate with investigators and partners at different institutions, including Iowa State University, the University of Florida, Oklahoma State University, Virginia Tech, and private farms in Lexington, KY. 


Required Education and Experience:
• PhD in kinesiology, animal science, or related field.


Preferred Education and Experience:

• Experience working with animals (lab or livestock).
• Hands-on post-graduate ’wet’ lab experience.
• Biological sample handling and processing (including blood and skeletal muscle).
• Experience working with livestock, specifically horses.
• Cell culture techniques.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability multi task and work cooperatively with others and independently.

Demonstrated publication record.
• Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to communicate results, interpretations, and recommendations and answer complex questions internally and externally.
• Willingness to participate in meetings with stakeholders/industry representatives.

General Description:

Assist with validating novel assays related to inflammation and energetics in skeletal muscle samples in an array of species, including horses, cattle, pigs, rats, mice, sheep, and birds and to extend efforts at optimizing performance and health in humans and livestock.

• Assist with writing grant proposals, manuscripts, and presentation of research results at academic symposiums/lab meetings.
• Train junior lab members.

Other duties as assigned.
