Oak Street Health is a rapidly growing company of primary care centers for adults on Medicare in medically-underserved communities where there is little to no quality healthcare. Oak Street’s care is based on an entirely new model that is based on value for its patients, not on volume of services. The company is accountable for its patients’ health, spending more than twice as long with its patients and taking on the risks and costs of their care.
Role Description:
The Executive Medical Director will join Oak Street Health at a critical time in the history of our company and of primary care. The opportunity for impact is large and growing, and Oak Street is leading the transition from fee-for-service to value-based care.
The Executive Medical Director will be responsible for leading our provider teams in one division which comprises several regional markets. The primary responsibility for the Executive Medical Director is management of and collaboration with local providers and medical directors. The Executive Medical Director is responsible for ensuring we achieve operational/clinical excellence and truly world class performance metrics in hospital admissions, quality/outcome metrics, patient satisfaction, clinician satisfaction, and medical cost. To offer context for the practice and to remain close to our patients, the Executive Medical Director will ideally practice primary care in our clinics 1 day per week alongside provider colleagues. Additionally, we see this leader being a key thought partner in providing feedback on our clinical model. The role may require interstate travel to additional Oak Street clinics. The Executive Medical Director will be expected to closely partner and collaborate with the Division President to achieve all organizational outcomes at the division level.
Core Responsibilities: In addition to the limited clinical duties caring for Oak Street patients, the Executive Medical Director is responsible for the following leadership and administrative duties.
Medical Director Management & Coaching: Oak Street is seeking a leader to manage and develop our medical directors and providers. This management duty includes:
● Leading medical directors and ensuring their priorities are in line with those of the organization. This includes but is not limited to supporting medical directors as they manage their teams, being the “go-to” for all questions, and actively communicating updates and business priorities.
● Supporting medical directors to ensure their clinics are appropriately staffed to meet organizational needs, including support interviewing, hiring, and retaining providers.
● Coaching and providing content/thought leadership on topics that include:
● Providing timely and constructive feedback to providers so the medical group continues to improve performance for patients and colleagues.
● Helping medical directors master the data-driven tools and practices required to keep patients well and out of the hospital.
● Reviewing regular quality dashboards with medical directors, coaching on tools to improve quality outcomes.
Providing managed care experience/teaching to medical directors as they counsel their teams of providers.
● Understanding and communicating provider performance/compensation plans and being able to answer questions and deliver results to medical directors who do the same for their reports. ● Serving as formal manager for medical directors in doing regular performance reviews and check-ins, approving paid-time-off requests, and managing miscellaneous human resources topics for medical directors in the market.
Physician Leadership Development: A limiting factor for any provider organization, really for healthcare globally, is physician leadership. One major responsibility for the Executive Medical Director is to develop physician leadership skills in providers throughout the market. There is a strong commitment to this development from our leadership team, and the Provider Services team will provide administrative and strategic support as well as coordinate a variety of events/curricula. The objective of this work is to grow a pipeline of internal clinical leaders who are skilled in problem solving, communication, conflict resolution, value-based care delivery, and teaming with clinicians and executives.
