Our Health Solutions division has a full-time opening for a Director of Underwriting. This position is responsible for departmental level strategy and execution by leading and supervising a team of underwriters and support staff. The Director of Underwriting ensures effective financial management of multi-employer self-insured trusts and related benefits including all aspects of underwriting and financial analysis for group health plans including prospect and renewal underwriting for Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Disability coverages. This role works with senior management to develop business strategies involving products and services. Salary range: $164,000 to $189,000
Duties:
- Direct, oversee and perform activities related to the underwriting and analysis functions for health and welfare benefits for a multi-employer trust.
- Ensure integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Identify, develop and implement opportunities for continuous improvement. Research, design, develop, test, and implement underwriting, reporting, and plan documentation processes and procedures as necessary. Includes coordination with actuaries, finance and various vendors.
- Lead, manage and develop the performance of professional and support staff who oversee the financial elements of the health solutions services including activities such as assessing risk/liability, calculating, negotiating rates on basic-to-complex cases by analyzing industry, demographics, enrollment, claim history, plan designs for prospects and renewals as well as vendor and program changes.
- Support strategic endeavors with multi-employer trusts and church plan benefits and clients through data analysis, reporting, evaluation and presentations providing insights and recommendations to meet organization and trust goals and objectives.
- Lead and oversee ad hoc reporting and risk assessment and analysis to support business needs, arrive at correction of reporting errors, validation of data integrity, and establishment of need reporting abilities.
- Perform other related duties, including special projects, as necessary. The content of projects may vary.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Typically, 15+ years in actuarial, underwriting, risk assessment of medical, dental, vision, life, LTD etc. benefits
- Comprehensive knowledge of and proven successful track record managing group health insurance products, pricing methodologies, plan designs, product alternatives and strategies.
- Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks and a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
- Must be able to maintain a high degree of accuracy and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor’s degree is required with a major in Math, Actuarial Science, Finance, or Business preferred.
- Professional designations such as ASA, FSA, and/or CPCU preferred.
Skills:
- Technical Skills: Advanced critical thinking skills and expert knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, pricing methodologies and strategies. Ability to evaluate complex data and multiple data sources to guide underwriting decisions.
- Leadership & Management: Experience managing and developing underwriting teams, implementing strategic initiatives. Strong leadership skills including coaching, development and team building.
