Senior Protection Engineer

The Opportunity

Ulteig is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Sr. Protection Engineer (Hydro & Pumping) within the Automation, Integration, and System Protection (AISP) Department. This role is focused on supporting protective relay replacement projects and includes design, development, and commissioning responsibilities—primarily in substations and hydroelectric facilities.

While the position supports work in the greater Sacramento, CA area, candidates do not need to reside in Sacramento. We are seeking individuals who are based in California and willing to travel throughout the state to support project needs. The Sr. Protection Engineer acts as a technical leader and will plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.

What You'll Do

Provides technical guidance for engineers/technicians, make design recommendations, performs design reviews, field demolition and construction support, leads onsite commissioning activities, and provides troubleshooting support for protective relay replacement projects. Depending on experience, may review relay setting development and coordination, perform protection system event analysis, develop a relay test plan, and/or SCADA/HMI design.

What We Expect from You

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required. ABET accredited program or equivalent required.
• PE registration is required.
• 8+ years of engineering and commissioning experience.
• Effective mentoring skills are preferred.
• Experience reviewing and/or producing one-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel elevations and bills of materials.
• Experience with HV substation equipment, MV electrical (apparatus) equipment including station service, 15 kV switchgear and protective relaying.
• Experience leading onsite commissioning in one or more of the following areas: CT/PT wiring injection/verification, protective relay test, protective relay end-to-end test, functional verification of protection schemes, and CT/PT load verification is preferred.
• Experience leading onsite demolition and construction engineering support is preferred.
• Experience applying and teaching protection system engineering practices and principles for HV substation and transmission equipment is a plus.
• Familiar with application of industry standards, such as NERC PRC, is a plus
• Knowledge of SCADA systems and programming is a plus.
• Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) and California Electrical Code (CEC) is a plus.
• Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access)
• Ability to work in a high-paced team environment 
• Willing to travel 10-15% of the time.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving standards.
• Must have permanent authorization to work in the US
