At BMS, the Global Congress Excellence Team is responsible for driving an integrated, cross-functional (i.e., Medical and Commercial) strategic approach to engagement and education at congresses, in alignment with portfolio planning and pipeline prioritization. The scope of the Global Congress Excellence team will span across matrix governance, alignment, and execution on all pre-, peri-, and post- congress activities worldwide related to the Disease area strategy across the portfolio.  

The Executive Director, Global Congress Excellence (GCE) will lead the cross-functional Congress capability, ensuring unified congress strategy and excellence in execution to enhance patient reach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Vice President (VP), Medical Excellence and serves as a senior member of the Medical Excellence Leadership Team.
  • Establishes a clear, viable, and compelling strategy for the Congress capability, aligned with the overall vision and objectives, and designed to ensure delivery of timely and high-quality unified (e.g., cross-functional) presence at congresses worldwide. 
  • Builds a high-performing team with clear roles and responsibilities and a strong focus on people development.
  • Drives a high-performance culture by fostering innovation, collaboration, customer focus, accountability, and commitment to increase the impact of Global Congress Excellence.
  • Optimizes and drives the strategic framework for obtaining cross-functional alignment across cross functional teams (e.g., Medical, R&D, Commercialization, WW Commercialization Learning, Legal) to ensure successful execution of pre-, peri-, and post- Congress activities. 
  • Serves as single point of accountability to drive an integrated cross-functional strategic approach to BMS engagement at congresses to align with portfolio planning and pipeline prioritization. 
  • Interfaces with senior leaders to make trade-off decisions and navigate through budget/resource constraints to deliver on business priorities to support existing product portfolio and launches of new products into the marketplace. 
  • Develops and owns the Global Congress Excellence budget, ensuring optimal allocation and prioritization of high priority / impact initiatives.
  • Designs and executes impact measurement strategy and utilizes learnings to shape future congress strategies.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 15+ years of Pharmaceutical/Healthcare industry experience with >5 years leadership in Medical Congresses/events.
  • Proven experience in establishing long-term strategic direction and ability to lead teams to drive optimal business results.
  • Demonstration of senior leadership with prior Medical Affairs or Commercial Leadership experience across multi-functional and multi-cultural teams.
  • Very strong team management skills with a focus on building team culture and developing talent.
  • Exemplary strategic thinking with ability to define and build an “industry leading” capability.
  • Proven ability to lead without authority across a complicated matrix environment, including with senior executives.
  • Customer-focused, strong visionary with the ability to innovate and to identify high-impact initiatives (quality vs quantity of initiatives).
