About the Team/Role
WEX Inc is seeking a self-driven and motivated State Income Tax Manager to join their team. The ideal candidate will primarily focus on state income tax matters, thus deep knowledge and experience with state apportionment and state modifications is critical to the role. Ideally this role will be located in Maine (with the option for Hybrid), working in our Corporate Global Headquarters in Portland, Maine. For the right candidate, WEX is flexible for this role to work remotely within the US.
How you'll make an impact
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in an innovative tax department that strives to create best-in-class processes and employ leading edge technologies. As part of the team, the candidate will:
Manage and oversee preparation, submission and payment of US state income and franchise tax returns, including gross receipt returns
Calculation of state apportionment, including effective state tax rate
Preparation and/or review of state modification workpapers, including NOL and credit carryovers
Manage relationships with third-party providers for state income tax compliance and subject matter experts
Responsible for managing state tax technology to drive automation within the tax processes and reduce risk of manual error
Manage all state income and franchise tax jurisdictional correspondence (exams and notices)
Performs state tax research and analysis
Keep informed of tax laws, regulations, and rulings pertaining to state income taxes. Attends seminars and similarly instructional events to expand knowledge of tax laws and interpretations.
Participate in special projects as dictated by the needs of the business, specifically acquisition-related activities
Experience you'll bring
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Masters in Accounting/Tax or other advanced degree is preferred.
Minimum of 10-15+ years related state income tax experience required. Experience managing all aspects of state income tax including management of tax notices and audits.
Working knowledge of PC based application software with an emphasis on data management skills required, including experience with Alteryx and UiPath.
Experience with Thomson Reuters OneSource products (or similar) preferred.
Strong accounting, analytical and problem solving skills, including ability to use own judgment and initiative in problem resolution
Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with flexibility in methods of communication and interactions with professionals in various functional areas
Detail oriented; ability to multitask and work in a fast paced deadline driven environment.
Active mentoring and development of tax team skills through active management of tax resource pool
