Position Overview
The Supervisor, Technical Specialist works with the Clinical Laboratory Directors, Managers, and Supervisors to coordinate, implement, and troubleshoot various new and current laboratory processes. This position works with the Technical Specialists, giving guidance to coordinate and ensure the proper execution of laboratory troubleshooting, laboratory information system (LIS) maintenance, workbook creation and maintenance, and the process of verifying result release, pending list management and investigation.
Additionally, the Supervisor, Technical Specialist will work collaboratively with QC team, the Training team, the IT department, Laboratory Systems Development, and other laboratory departments as needed to develop receive and implement new procedures into the Technical lab and ensure the Clinical Lab team is supported during integration.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform moderate, and/or highly complex analytic processes without direct supervision. Use routine and specialized automated and non-automated laboratory procedures and/or techniques for which the team member is qualified, trained, and demonstrates competency according to established lab section operating procedures.
- Operate laboratory instruments and ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
- Troubleshoot instrument malfunction(s) and perform preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs on all laboratory equipment.
- Complete required maintenance activities on equipment, recognize and elevate potential issues to the team members responsible.
- Maintain records and review documentation of all aspects of the clinical laboratory.
- Understand and assist in training employees, as needed.
- Verify accuracy and enter data in the laboratory computer system, along with appropriate explanatory or interpretive information, while meeting all section turn-around times.
- Validate acceptability of test results by review of quality control and all other test parameters.
- Identify the technical, instrumental, and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results and assist the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor in developing corrective action.
- Assist the Clinical Laboratory Managers and Supervisors in complex troubleshooting.
- Supervise the work product output expectations of the Technical Specialist team.
- Respond to technical questions consistent with level of training.
- Participate in continuing education and staff meetings.
- Prepare and present continuing education programs for department personnel, as requested.
- Assist in verifying competency of new employees.
- Assist personnel on new methods and troubleshooting.
- Contribute to design, research, review, and writing of laboratory manuals for existing processes and new procedures or instrumentation.
- Ensure that all patient results are not reported until corrective actions have been taken and the systems are functioning properly.
- Evaluate competency of the Clinical Lab Technical Specialists.
