THE OPPORTUNITY
The VP, Corporate Sustainability and Impact will act as the company’s subject matter expert in the areas of ESG and Corporate Sustainability and will be accountable for working with key stakeholders across the enterprise to develop, implement, and communicate the company’s holistic ESG and CSI strategies that drive long-term growth and sustainable value for Scholastic.
In addition, this individual will be responsible for leading efforts to develop and implement the change management strategy to include the creation of roadmaps, goals, milestones, and metrics along with developing both the internal and external communications strategies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Define, develop, lead and maintain a global, corporate-wide multi-pronged environmental sustainability and social impact program, working closely with the EVP, Corporate Development and Investor Relations, and in collaboration with leadership, our Board of Directors, as well as with the Supply Chain, CSR, Impact and DEIB teams. Advocate for the incorporation of ESG considerations into the wider business strategy and educate internal and external stakeholders on the business case and impact of ESG. Lead efforts to identify opportunities for Scholastic corporate commitment, engagement, and alignment with global initiatives such as the UNGC, UNSDGs, and The Climate Pledge.
Partner with the Investor Relations, Marketing, Corporate Communications and Internal Communications teams in developing ESG content for various platforms and reports, developing and co-managing customer and investor ESG engagement programs and drive improved metrics among major ESG advisory services and align employee engagement with our ESG to support a higher share price and greater employee engagement. Collaborate and coordinate closely with Legal, Investor Relations, Finance and other stakeholders to ensure accurate and compliant ESG & sustainability disclosures and required reporting and that governance practices meet reporting and board/governance requirements.
Consult with Supply Chain/Manufacturing and the businesses to assess environmental impacts and create a sustainability roadmap with science-based targets and carbon reduction plans. Support contract reviews, enhance supplier environmental performance, develop sustainability awareness and foster sustainability in product innovation and processes. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to establish and operationalize a carbon emission measurement program and institute ongoing processes aligned with reporting requirements.
Leverage our strong social position to develop an integrated corporate sustainability and impact story that utilizes Scholastic’s full suite of assets to amplify engagement around CSR/ESG programming and communications. Solidify our Social Narrative by working closely with the Chief Impact Officer, the head of CSR, Corporate Philanthropy and Human Resources departments, who collectively are responsible for developing and implementing the company’s policies and initiatives in this area
Assess trends, emerging issues and conduct peer company ESG and sustainability reporting and program reviews/benchmarking to enable gap analysis and reporting. Act as an internal subject matter expert while collaborating to identify the best approach for Scholastic to address ongoing ESG considerations. Lead initiatives and manage multi-stakeholder ESG-related projects to achieve the goals of the program. Work with executive leadership to develop materials for the Board of Directors to ensure their understanding and oversight of the company’s global ESG strategies, initiatives, goals and progress to meet their fiduciary responsibilities.
