The Opportunity:

  • Support the testing of a web and mobile application that converts FEMA IPAWS emergency alerts into American Sign Language (ASL) for improved accessibility.
  • Assist with functional and usability testing to ensure accurate ASL translation and a seamless user experience for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing users.
  • Collaborate with developers and product managers to identify, report, and track issues while ensuring the application meets accessibility standards.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the application by providing feedback on user interface design, features, and functionality.
  • Gain hands-on experience with web/mobile application testing tools, accessibility guidelines, and public safety technologies.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform testing on a web and mobile application that converts FEMA IPAWS emergency alerts into American Sign Language (ASL) for accessibility.
  • Identify, document, and report software bugs, glitches, or issues, working closely with development teams to resolve them.
  • Conduct usability testing, providing feedback on the ease of use and accessibility of the application for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing users.
  • Assist in reviewing IPAWS emergency alerts in various formats to ensure proper ASL translation alignment.
  • Analyze the user interface (UI) for clarity, consistency, and accessibility compliance with established standards.
  • Collaborate with product managers and developers to refine user stories, requirements, and testing criteria.
  • Assist in creating detailed test cases, test plans, and reporting templates to enhance testing efficiency.
  • Participate in virtual meetings to discuss testing progress, issues, and findings.
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility regulations and best practices, such as WCAG and Section 508.
  • Provide feedback on features that can enhance overall user experience, especially for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing users.
  • Track and manage defect resolution through the bug-tracking system, ensuring timely fixes.
  • Develop a solid understanding of FEMA IPAWS and its role in public safety and emergency alerting.


Qualifications:

Required: 

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of software testing principles, including functional, regression, and usability testing.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and guidelines, including Section 508 and WCAG.
    Strong communication skills, with the ability to document and report testing results clearly and concisely.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
  • Willingness to learn about the FEMA IPAWS system and its integration with accessibility technologies.
  • Expert knowledge and fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.


Desired:

  • Previous internship or academic experience in software testing, QA, or accessibility-focused projects.
  • Familiarity with web and mobile application testing tools, such as Selenium, JIRA, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with mobile app development and testing, particularly for iOS and Android platforms.
  • Exposure to assistive technologies and experience with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing accessibility needs.
  • Familiarity with FEMA IPAWS system or other emergency alert systems.
  • Understanding of agile development methodologies.
