Video & Messaging

Our team enables everyone on BetterUp to have impactful conversations. Every day, thousands of coaching conversations happen on our WebRTC-based video call experience and we power the magic behind each conversation. Think of tooling helping you be present in the moment, or changes ensuring video calls work seamlessly for everyone. Besides calls, we are responsible for our messaging feature set and any interaction where two or more people connect and talk. We thus play a crucial role in enabling BetterUp to help everyone live with greater clarity, purpose and passion.

As part of the platform organization, we work in a data driven environment and strive to build systems that other teams can leverage to quickly build new experiences for our users. As a result, you will collaborate with other squads in BetterUp to design, architect, implement, and monitor new product offerings enabling people to connect and flourish.

What you’ll do:

• End-to-end Owner: 
• Own your components during the entire lifecycle, from planning, development, (cloud) deployment and maintenance phase.
• Build scalable and tolerant systems using container technologies (Docker, K8s) and cloud infrastructure as code (Heroku, AWS, Terraform) as well as internal tooling to accelerate product development cycles.
• Product Engineer: 
• Develop components that BetterUp will use to optimize for rapid growth keeping in mind the big picture, and at the same time you keep the technical debt under control. 
• Collaborate with cross functional teams to distill and synthesize requirements into discrete and meaningful iterations.
• Lean and Agile Thinker: 
• Work in short feedback loops and learn via data and metrics. 
• Master the use of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment infrastructure to rapidly prototype and validate ideas.
• Data-driven decision maker:  
• Influence the roadmap by collecting, using and presenting data. 
• Support data-driven decisions, spot opportunities for improvements and optimizations of our systems. 
• Fit the technical components of your team into the business context of BetterUp.

If you have some or all of the following, please apply:

• 5+ years relevant experience, at least part of which in a startup environment.
• Alignment with BetterUp mission of enabling self-driven behavior change.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• You like to collaborate with colleagues outside your team and understand the complete technical landscape.
• Maintainer and owner of your components in production (volume, support, debugging).
• Strong software engineering practices (e.g. coding, unit testing, code reviews, design documentation, and collaborative reviews)
• Experienced with modern backend languages, technologies, coding, testing, debugging, and automation techniques. 
• Experience with architecture, large-scale distributed systems, data structures and data streaming technologies.
• Optional: Experience with WebRTC, WebSockets, Ruby, Elixir, Rails, EmberJS
