We’re looking for someone who...

• Can scope and strategize for opportunities across products that leverage data experience design

• Asks questions to get at the deeper-level “why,” prioritizing relevance and meaning over the artifact or visualization itself

• Investigates the nuances of a dataset to inform design and development constraints

• Rapidly prototypes concepts with real data in code or other tools (design apps, BI tools, etc)

• Evangelizes the importance of designing with real data to ensure the content fits the mold

• Can prioritize, sequence and contextualize data in an interface with the goal of democratizing data access, insights and decision-making.

• Understands the design process and can adapt it to incorporate data visualization processes

• Enjoys sharing their process, bringing others along for buy-in, and creating a shared language with expectations for data visualization as a craft

• Is a problem-solver with a knack for iterating on solutions that balance user and business needs

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT IN THIS ROLE

As a Capital One data visualization designer, you will work on internal and associate-facing tools and platforms.

Rather than take orders on what to build, you’ll engage users in conversations to uncover how they do their work, what tools they use, how they understand their work, and how they currently solve their problems. You will work to explore pain points and areas for meaningful improvement. We work through a human-centered approach.

In addition to understanding the humans we design for, you’ll spend much of your time finding the shape of data. This entails immersing yourself in and exploring the data. You’ll rapidly pull apart and tease out the nuances of the data to understand the breadth, depth, extent, outliers, relationships, and other factors that reveal its structure as a whole. You’ll partner with our data, product and tech partners to accomplish this.

Using technologies like Angular, D3, and others, you’ll build or collaborate with front-end developers to build meaningful, interactive, responsive, frictionless, and succinct visualizations for a variety of subject matters and domains.

Basic qualifications

• 2+ years collaborating with cross-functional teams

• 1+ years designing data experiences and visualizations

• 1+ cleaning, formatting, and validating data for visualizations (alongside data specialists or solo)

Preferred qualifications (these indicate a particularly strong candidate)

• Professional experience in one of the following: data visualization design, graphic design 

• Professional experience working with experience/product design teams

• 2+ years of experience engineering data visualizations and interactive experiences

• 2+ years expertise in HTML, CSS, Javascript

• 2+ years in D3

• 1+ years in a modern Javascript framework (Angular, React, Vue)

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $114,700 - $130,900 for Sr. Associate, Design

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
