Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Assistant Superintendent 1 at Kankakee River State Park for The Office of Land Management. This position will participate in groundskeeping and landscaping duties, provide training to assigned staff, inspect vehicles, inspect the wastewater treatment plant, and schedule needed maintenance/repairs.  Kankaee River has been treasured for centuries - first by Native Americans, later by traders and farmers, and as early as the 1890s by recreation seekers - Kankakee River State Park offers visitors its proud heritage in an unspoiled setting. Essential Functions

  • Under general supervision of the Site Superintendent at Kankakee River State Park and Iroquois County State Fish and Wildlife Area, supervises and participates in site maintenance activities such as building repairs, vehicle and equipment maintenance, minor construction. 
  • Serves as working supervisor.
  • Participates and supervises the activities of the subordinate staff engaged in inspecting sites and satellites for safety hazards such as flooding, downed trees, malfunctioning maintenance equipment, damaged day use equipment, and facilities.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.
  • Assumes full responsibility of operations and planning during the Site Superintendent’s absence.
  • Monitors and directs site staff in organizing and running outdoor recreational programs including camping, Natural Resource programs like hunting, camping, fishing, and wildlife observation.
  • Evaluates and reports to Site Superintendent on problems or quality of work of vendor’s employees, volunteers, concessionaires and other interest groups.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree with courses in parks and recreation, natural resource administration or public administration and one year's related functional supervisory experience.
