Position Summary
The Environmental Health and Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting, developing, implementing, and maintaining a variety of environmental, health, and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and to promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship within the organization. This role involves hands-on work, program management, training, and incident response. The individual will work collaboratively with various departments to identify and mitigate EHS risks, drive continuous improvement, and ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Program Development & Implementation:
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of EHS programs, policies, and procedures (e.g., Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Emergency Response, Waste Management, Ergonomics, PPE, etc.).
- Ensure programs meet or exceed regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Support the implementation of EHS management systems.
Compliance & Reporting:
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT, CUPA, local fire codes, etc.).
- Prepare and submit required EHS reports to regulatory agencies in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain EHS records, permits, and documentation.
- Participate in and support regulatory inspections and audits.
- Generate and contribute safety metrics (head count, hours, incidents, inspections findings, etc.) to report to Safety Committee and site leadership.
Risk Assessment & Hazard Control:
- Conduct regular EHS inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
- Recommend and implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs) to mitigate risks and address findings.
- Perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and assist in developing safe work practices.
Training & Communication:
- Develop and deliver EHS training programs for new hires and existing employees on various topics.
- Promote EHS awareness and a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
- Serve as a resource to employees and management on EHS-related matters.
- Facilitate safety committee meetings and initiatives.
Incident Investigation & Emergency Response:
- Lead or participate in incident investigations (accidents, injuries, near misses, spills, etc.) to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain incident records and track injury/illness rates (e.g., DART, TRIR, etc.).
- Lead, coordinate, and participate in emergency response activities, including drills and actual emergencies.
- Organize training and lead site specific Emergency Response Team (ERT)
Waste Management:
- Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste management programs, including proper labeling, storage, transportation, and disposal in compliance with regulations.
Continuous Improvement:
- Analyze EHS data and trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Stay current with new EHS regulations, industry trends, and best practices.
- Support and drive continuous improvement initiatives within EHS programs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Requirements, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Education: Professional Safety & Health Officer/Specialist, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field certification (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
- Minimum of 5 years experience in an EHS role, preferably in a biotechnology, medical device, or manufacturing environment.
- IACUC, animal care, and husbandry.
- Demonstrated experience with EHS program development and implementation.
- Experience with regulatory reporting and compliance.
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local EHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.).
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and EHS audits.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including grammar and punctuation), including the ability to develop and deliver effective training.
