Process Engineering Intern

Project Summary:

The R&D Process Engineering Intern will work on projects to determine specific mechanical energy (SME) on a lab scale and compare it to production line data, evaluate lamination capabilities and future product structures, and study the differences between two resins and the resulting impact on processing conditions. The intern will learn about the Roofing Membrane industry, chemistry/formulation, raw materials, process safety, process equipment, and product quality requirements. In addition to those, the intern will interface with all facets of the business to learn where a R&D Process Engineer can fit into a manufacturing facility. The R&D Process Engineering Intern will work in the Research and Development lab and be part of a team of chemists and engineers.

The intern will receive an introduction to TPO, PVC, and EPDM end-use applications, manufacturing processes and formulations, as well as lab and pilot-scale chemistry techniques. Basic statistical methods will be utilized to design experiments and analyze data obtained, and the intern will be expected to utilize academic research as a tool to explain the relationship between Science and Process application improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work to understand the product chemistry and the production processes.
• Assist with operation of lab machinery to produce samples and record associated processing data.
• Execute basic statistical analyses to evaluate processing data.
• Present research findings to R&D group and CCM executives
• Conduct data analysis using Minitab and/or Excel.
• The candidate will create a PowerPoint presentation that will be presented to CCM team along with all other summer interns.
• Submit a final formal report with findings.

Qualification:

Carlisle Construction Materials, R&D Process Engineering Group is seeking a highly motivated student who can excel working independently in a cross-functional environment. The candidate must be willing to receive positive feedback, be detail-oriented, have project management experience, and have an understanding of data analysis. Candidates should meet the following criteria:

Currently enrolled in an Undergraduate program in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or closely-related discipline

• Junior or senior level academic standing
• Minimum GPA of 3.0
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Minitab is a Plus
• Basic understanding of statistics. Sig-sigma experience is a plus.
• Capable of performing quality testing duties.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

Additional Information:

Must be able to work onsite Mid-May to Mid-August.

The internship will be held in the Research and Innovation Center in Carlisle, PA. The intern is expected to work 40 hours a week (Monday – Friday) for the duration of the internship.
