Job Description

Performs routine and specialized tests in one or various sections of the clinical laboratory, independently or with minimal supervision. Recognizes the clinical significance of each test performed and reports results within established time frames. Serves as resource person for immunohematology and blood product transfusion therapy. Provides a timely communication link between the clinicians and Blood Bank Laboratory leadership. The position actively supports the Hospital’s and the department’s Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals through modeling of appropriate behavior and by providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.

Location: Will train at Streeterville mail location, then move to Schaumburg, IL when we open that location in August.

Shift: Monday through Friday

Essential Job Functions:

  • Follows clinical laboratory testing procedures and policies in the performance of routine and specialized tests. Identifies source and nature of test problems and makes appropriate recommendation as to course of action.

  • Applies scientific method in problem solving and assists in the evaluation of new methods and techniques. Assures that quality control criteria are met and adheres to established laboratory policies in handling hazardous substances.

  • Records necessary documentation to comply with various agency and Hospital regulations. Performs required instrument maintenance at the prescribed time and logs appropriately. Is able to perform minor trouble-shooting on instrumentation.

  • Recognizes the clinical significance of inappropriate blood orders. Educates clinicians in the appropriate use of blood components and the required indications. Refers all unresolved inappropriate blood orders to Blood Bank Laboratory leadership.

  • Instructs and trains rotating residents, students, physicians and new members of the laboratory staff in laboratory testing procedures as needed.

  • Identifies and correlates possible sources and nature of serological testing, interference related to drugs, prior transfusion, or passive transmission in immunohematology testing.

  • Applies scientific methods in problem-solving for complex immunohematology testing.

  • Assures a clean work area and assists in maintaining sufficient supplies at each workstation.

  • Assists in the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols.

  • Completes competency testing and mandatory and continuing education requirements as defined by the position.

  • Other job functions as assigned such as developing, coordinating, assessing, and documenting competency testing.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s in chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology is required.

  • Or if hired before February 28, 2002, has experience, training, or both, covering several fields of medical laboratory work and of such quality as to provide him or her with education and training in medical technology equivalent to that described in point 1.

  • Meets all regulatory requirements for high-complexity testing.

  • Certification/Licensure/Registration: ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.

Pay Range

$28.50-$46.60 Hourly
