About the role

Structural Analysis & Tracking Program Engineer

Company:

The Boeing Company

The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft with unique capabilities, combining the attributes of a strategic airlifter with those of a tactical airlifter.  Currently, C-17 operators plan to operate them until at least the 2070s, which will require extensive engineering support to monitor, modify, repair, and improve the fleet. In support of this goal, C-17 Structures is looking for motivated individuals to join the team to support of the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program.

A Loads & Dynamics Engineer works as an integral part of the Structures team, providing external flight, ground and jacking loads and fatigue stress spectra.  They must have the ability to effectively communicate technical information and collaborate with engineers and leaders form a wide variety of engineering disciplines.

As part of a US Air Force required Aircraft Structural Integrity Program, and the C-17 Sustainment contract, the C-17 Structures group provides all engineering support for the C-17 to the US Air Force and Foreign customers.  This includes administering a tracking program to track individual aircraft structural component life by processing aircraft flight data to develop usage severity.  The results of this effort are closely monitored by the Boeing team and the customers to manage the airplanes’ structural life.  Team members evaluate potential aircraft configuration changes for impact on internal and external loads, and use computational tools to determine structural impacts. Occasional domestic and international travel to interface with customers will be required.

This is an exciting and uncommon opportunity to work on an amazing aircraft with a diverse and dedicated engineering team.  Develop your technical competence as well as your leadership skills on a program with an amazing history and long term outlook. We’re highly supportive of innovative thinking, we respect and acknowledge hard work, we recognize maturity and integrity, and we reward bottom-line achievement. At Boeing, we value your curiosity, your determination, and your imagination.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Guide product design and verify structural integrity by using analytical methods, finite element models/simulations and other analysis tools throughout the product lifecycle to develop the structural environment, characteristics and performance

  • Generate structural loads using Boeing C-17 methodologies and develop loads cycle analysis tools to streamline loads generation and delivery

  • Perform vibe, shock, and modal analysis using finite element models built from solid CAD geometry

  • Develop test plans and configuration, support component vibe, shock, acoustic, and acceleration test execution, and analyze/report test results to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications

  • Create loads and dynamics reports

  • Participate in internal/external design reviews, technical interchange meetings (TIMs), preliminary/critical design reviews (PDR/CDR) with government Customer and program leadership

  • Collaborate with engineers in other disciplines (structures, mass properties, materials & processes, aerodynamics, etc.)

  • Creating, manipulating and using data from finite element models

  • Developing loads, vibration, and shock requirements

  • Vibration, shock, or acoustic testing

  • Writing technical reports

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • 1+ years of experience in one or more of the following aircraft structural engineering disciplines: Stress Analysis, Service Engineering, Airline Structural Engineering, Liaison Engineering or Design Engineering

  • Experience with finite element modeling structural analysis methods and tools, including MSC Nastran, ABAQUS, etc.

  • Experience in engineering modeling and/or analysis with computer programming of analytical m
