Position Information
Texas A&M AgriLife Research at Corpus Christi, is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate for a period of one year. The Research Associate conducts routine activities associated with the production of various marine species for aquaculture research and production. Activities include rearing and maintenance of aquatic species in hatchery and field settings, production of microalgae, designing and building aquatic animal rearing systems, and assisting with routine upkeep of systems and facilities. Work is performed under the supervision of a biologist, scientist or an administrative or technical superior.
Responsibilities:
- Performs maintenance activities of research facilities, including grounds, building structures, aquaculture tanks, water systems and equipment. These duties require driving a vehicle to complete research deliverables, pick up supplies, and drive to marine sites.
- Rears and maintains aquatic species, including activities involving spawning, feeding, measuring, tagging, counting, and sorting.
- Designs, constructs, and maintains aquatic animal rearing systems.
- Follows standard operating procedures.
- Monitors water quality parameters and production data to support specific research or management projects.
- Assists personnel involved in a series of controlled environment or analysis experiments.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years of related professional experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with rearing of shellfish and shellfish hatchery techniques.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment.
- Ensure attention to detail. Able to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture or related field.
- Experience with maintaining large-scale aquatic life support systems.
