Intern – R&D Front-End Innovation Intern - Oral Healthcare – Bothell, WA – Summer 2025

Are you interested in an Internship opportunity with Philips? We welcome individuals who are currently pursuing an undergraduate (BS) and/or graduate (MS) degree to participate in 3 month paid intern opportunities at our site in Bothell, WA. Through this role you will work across diverse scientific and engineering domains, including materials science, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies. The role is based at our site in Bothell, WA.

Your role:

  • Conduct research and assist in the development of new oral healthcare technologies. Utilize analytical measurement techniques to characterize materials and coatings used in in-vitro models.
  • Assist in experimental design, data collection, and statistical analysis to evaluate product performance. Support the development of verification methods and instrumentation for function testing and optimization.
  • Utilize, practice, work on projects related to polymer science (viscoelastic materials), metrology, tribology, rheology, manufacturing engineering (coating), additive manufacturing, molding, dynamic behavior of material, optical measurement system, image processing, error reduction, data analysis, mechatronics, engineering dynamics, kinematics, kinetics, coordinate system transformation, computer graphics, engineering statistics, stochastic model development, motion capture system, microbiology, cell biology, biofilm, or human anatomy (dentition).
  • Participate in front-end innovation and pre-development processes to translate commercial and functional requirements into tangible product concepts. Contribute to early-stage innovation by generating, evaluating, and refining new product ideas.
  • Develop and document experimental procedures, testing protocols, and technical reports. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including research, product development, and regulatory teams, to ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Present findings and project updates to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

You’re the right fit if:

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline and at least three years of coursework completed (for undergraduates).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen interest in innovation.
  • Coursework or experiences in polymer science (viscoelastic materials), metrology, tribology, rheology, manufacturing engineering (coating), additive manufacturing, molding, dynamic behavior of material, optical measurement system, image processing, error reduction, data analysis, mechatronics, engineering dynamics, kinematics, kinetics, coordinate system transformation, computer graphics, engineering statistics, stochastic model development, motion capture system, microbiology, cell biology, biofilm, or human anatomy (dentition).
  • Exposure to engineering/computational simulation tools including FEM, CAD/CAE software or prototyping techniques is a plus. Basic experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar analytical tools. Familiarity with statistical tools such as Design of Experiments (DoE), Minitab, or JMP. Knowledge or coursework in materials science, metrology, tribology, rheology, biomechanics, or biofilm studies is desirable.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and communicate effectively with stakeholders and strong documentation skills and ability to present research findings clearly. Enthusiasm for learning and applying new scientific principles in a practical setting.

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.
