About the role

Description

The College of Innovation and Technology offers undergraduate programs in Mathematics and Actuarial Mathematics, and undergraduate and graduate programs in Data Analytics and Data Science. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in these fields, mentor students, establish a robust externally-funded research program, and publish in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. They will help shape new program and course development surrounding actuarial mathematics, statistics, and/or mathematical data science.

The College continues to develop strong ties with regional industries leading to applied research and experiential learning opportunities. Startup packages for the successful candidates include generous funding.

CIT is growing and in the midst of a significant faculty hiring initiative. The Department of Mathematics in the College of Innovation & Technology (CIT) at the University of Michigan-Flint invites applications for one or more tenure-track positions with expertise in any of the subdomains:

  • Applied Mathematics
  • Statistics / statistical learning
  • Actuarial Science

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, or in a mathematics-based area of data science, or a closely-related field by the appointment date. Please indicate your area of expertise in your cover letter. 

Candidates must show exceptional promise in both research and teaching and are expected to have an appreciation of and commitment to working with faculty and student body.

Applicants for tenured Associate and Full Professor must have academic experience demonstrating excellent teaching in experiential settings and a strong scholarship record, with potential for successful grant writing.

Candidates must have:

  • A record of teaching excellence, including the potential to teach in face-to-face, online, and experiential learning settings.
  • A record of research and scholarly publications, including the potential for an externally-funded research program
  • The ability to further the goals of the department, college, and university through the design and implementation of courses and/or programs
  • The ability to generate and mentor undergraduate student research project

This position is accepting applicants for the start dates of either major semester of the 2026-2027 academic year. Candidates should indicate their preferred start semester.  The University of Michigan-Flint is a regional public university and one of the three campuses of the University of Michigan.
