PAY RATE: $17.50 - $20.70/hr

The primary responsibility of the Climbing Lead Instructor is to provide on-site supervision for programs in addition to teaching responsibilities. The Lead Instructor will also provide support for participants and other instructors as well as act as a liaison between participants, parents, instructors, and the City of Lakewood.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES.  (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide on-site supervision of programs and staff to ensure quality programming is conducted.

Maintain all necessary forms, paperwork and attendance records for participants as requested.

Act as an on-site liaison to assist other instructors, facility staff, parents, and participants as needed.

Ability to instruct all climbing programs offered.

Experience setting ropes at outdoor crags, and ability to instruct participants in outdoor climbing is required.

Maintain a recreational focus in the gym at all times.

Problem solve, communicate and mediate (as needed) issues between parents, participants, staff, facility and the general public.

Attend to accidents and emergencies/crisis; complete necessary reports for all incidents.

Consult with Supervisor as necessary regarding city, department and division policies and procedures.

Maintain on-going communication with Supervisor regarding program status.

Assist instructors in teaching skills and rules to participants.

Maintain cleanliness and order of the program area.

Inventory and maintain all program equipment.

Assist in the development and enforcement of policies and procedures, emphasizing safety.

Ensure that closing duties are completed each evening.

Distribute program material as directed.

Ability to make decisions and enforce policies to ensure safety of staff and participants at all times.

Must attend mandatory staff meetings.

Assist Supervisor with continued program development as needed.

HOURS OF WORK

Monday-Thursday evenings

Saturdays 9am-1:30pm

Summer Camp hours starting June 3 – 9am-3pm Monday-Friday

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS

Adhere to facility scheduling.

Demonstrate creative ability in age-appropriate class design.

Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.

Perform other duties as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Supervision Received:

Receives general supervision from Recreation Coordinator, Youth

Supervision Given:     

Other variable staff

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Education:    

High school diploma or equivalent.

Technical knowledge of the sport of rock climbing.

Technical knowledge of outdoor rock climbing       

Preferred Certifications:

Current CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred or must be completed within first 3 months of hire date.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities                   

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Must be belay certified.

Previous outdoor instruction or guiding experience is desired.

Ability to perform the basic maneuvers of the sport of climbing.

Experience working with youth in a coaching/instructional capacity.

Ideal candidates will have experience developing curriculum and training.

Good vision, balance, coordination, arm/hand/leg movements.

Ability to give good, clear verbal direction to groups of 10 or more.

Ability to motivate and work with children and adults of all abilities.           

Ability to follow supervisor’s instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
